Students of Govt 1st Grade College, Car Street trek to Charmadi Ghat, to know impact of development

Mangaluru, 04 Feb: The Red Cross unit of Government First Grade College, Car Street, here, organized a trek to Western Ghat, led by Dr Mahesh K B, Red Cross co-ordinator and environmentalist Dinesh Holla on Saturday, February 2.
Western Ghats is one of major biodiversity hotspot among 18 regions in the world. Netravati River originates from a stream in Charmadi that has evergreen forest, wildlife, grassland. If the flora and fauna of Ghat is left undisturbed by humans; the people in towns and cities can breathe fresh air and lead healthy lives. The pristine forests are destroyed in the guise of developments by the successive governments.
The environmentalist and trekker Holla briefed 36 trekking students about the widespread damage caused by forest fires, encroachment of forest land, mafia of resorts and estate owners in exploiting natural resources etc.
The faculty of College – Dhiraj Kumar, Prabhakar Acharya, Gopinat Baliga and Geetanjali Baliga, DK district disaster management unit chief Nitin, Ashwin Kumar, Abhishek B N and Gloria D’Souza were present.
