Udupi/M’Belle: Free Books and Uniforms Distributed to Eighth Std. Students of St. Lawrence KM High S

Udupi/M’Belle, 12 Jun 2018: Free books, uniforms, calendars and identity cards were distributed to the newly admitted 36 eighth standard students of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School, Moodubelle during a function held in St. Lawrence PU College Hall on Tuesday, 12 June 2018 at 10 am. 

 

The function was presided over by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas-Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions. B. Sadanada Rao-retired teacher of Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School and one of the  sponsors of the uniforms was the chief guest. Other dignitaries on the dais included: Vincent Fernandes-Vice President of Parish pastoral Council, Gerald Fernandes-President of Parents-Teachers Association, Navin Correa-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College and Mrs. Sunita Kamath-Headmistress of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School.

 

The function began with welcome dance performed by high school students and prayer  song presented by  PUC students.

 

Mrs. Sunita Kamath in her introductory as well as welcome address narrated the difficulties that the high school has been facing due to paucity  of funds for the salaries of the honorary staff and also reduction in number of students at the entry point of eighth standard. She further said that when she approached some of the generous persons for their support, they came forward and extended their helping hand. She thanked the headmasters of higher primary schools of the neighbourhood for sending their students after seventh standard to St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School.

 

Valerian Crasta, Physical Training Teacher conducted the distribution of free books, uniforms, calendars and identity cards.  The school uniform was jointly sponsored by B. Sadananda Rao and his family as well as Kanehana and Sadhana Shetty-old students of the school. The school fee of all the students was sponsored by Mrs. Leena D’Silva-former Headmistress of the high school. Note books were given by Sandeep Acharya. School calendar was sponsored by Alphonse Mendonsa, Shankeerpura and identity cards were sponsored by Anil Alva. 

 

The dignitaries on the dais as well  as donors, well-wishers and parents in the audience distributed uniforms, notebooks, calendars and identity cards to the students.  One of the students of the eight standard  thanked the sponsors and donors for their support and goodwill. 

 

In his address, B. Sadananda Rao narrated the origin and growth of educational institutions in Moodubelle saying that it was his grandfather, Dasappayya who started the first school in the village and that was later handed over to the church in 1913. He served for many years as a teacher in the Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School from where he retired. He also recalled the starting of St. Lawrence High School in 1959 under the leadership of the then Parish Priest, late Fr. Abundius D’Souza. B. Sadananda Rao further said that he was one of the members of the high school committee and remembered the difficulties of raising funds to build the school. They had to practically move from house to house seeking donations and even paddy and rice. He expressed happiness that the high school has developed into PUC College and will continue to render service to the society and the village.

 

Two students of tenth standard who had secured 100 marks in the subject of Hindi at the SSLC examination were given prizes sponsored by Harold D’Souza, high school teacher. 

 

On this occasion, 15 PUC students and 3 SSLC students who had secured distinction marks were also felicitated by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas.

 

Fr. Clement Mascarenhas handed over free uniform and notebooks to one of the First Year PUC  Arts student. This year  First all the First Year Arts students will receive free uniforms and notebooks sponsored by  the Old Students Association under the presidentship of Maxim D’Sa.

 

Gerald Fernandes, President of Parents-Teachers Association in his message to the students appealed them to make good use of felicities provided to them by the school as well as the donors. Besides putting their efforts in studies they should develop an attitude of respect to their teachers and elders and wish them wherever and whenever they them.

 

In his presidential address, Fr. Clement Mascarenhas said that this was the happiest day  as people of the Moodubelle village irrespective of their religion have come together to sponsor the students and  honorary teachers. He appreciated the close relation between B. Sadananda Rao and his family with St. Lawrence Educational Institutions. He also lauded the efforts of Mrs. Sunita Kamath, the headmistress of the high school for making efforts to get support from people of goodwill of the village. He also encouraged the students to study well and repay their gratitude to the sponsors and donors of free uniform, notebooks, etc by their good performance.

 

A number of donors and sponsors as well as parents of the newly admitted eight standard students were present for the programme.

 

Navin Correa-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College proposed the vote of thanks and John Castelino, teacher of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School compeered the programme.
