Dubai, 17 Apr 2018: VFS TasHeel International, an authorized visa service provider to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia along with its CSR partner, Movement Mantra, a social enterprise which focuses on mindful movements to rehabilitate people with mobility challenges, held an indoor cricket tournament on Saturday, April 14, in support of people affected by Parkinson’s disease in Dubai.

Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, is named after the English doctor James Parkinson. In 1817, James explained Parkinson’s by publishing, An Essay on the Shaking Palsy. Marking his birthday, April 11 is celebrated as the World Parkinson’s Awareness Day and April month in entirety is celebrated as World Parkinson’s Awareness month.

Held under VFS TasHeel’s CSR programme, INVOLVE, two cricket teams of eight members were formed which included people with Parkinson’s, family members and volunteers from Movement Mantra and VFS TasHeel. Key performers received Best Batsman and Best Bowler Award while rest of the members received participation certificates for their efforts. The tournament was aimed at providing an opportunity for people with Parkinson’s to improve their mobility through practicing a sport. For those affected with Parkinson’s who face insurmountable difficulties in their everyday life including physical tremors, slowness of movement, postural instability and muscular rigidity, such extracurricular activities are extremely helpful on practical and emotional levels.

‘Movement is of utmost importance in Parkinson’s and by participating in this cricket tournament our members surprised not only those watching them but also themselves as they came out of their rigid and slow-moving bodies. We have been able to envelope the awareness initiative in a joyous ambience, where each of those participants, people with Parkinson’s and their Caregivers, enjoyed being part of the activity because of its communal nature,’ said Vonita Singh, professional Kathak Dancer and founder of Movement Mantra.

In line with the objectives of weaving corporate capabilities with the CSR initiative, VFS TasHeel Visa Services Center in UAE offers a comfortable and convenient place for bringing people with Parkinson’s together for weekly sessions. Over the course of two hours during the weekly sessions, the participants work through elements of dance and yoga techniques that aids in improving overall mobility and other Parkinson’s related challenges. The approach in these sessions have been shaped by Vonita’s experience as a caregiver gained during her father’s fight with Parkinson’s, and is validated by training with the New York based ‘Dance for Parkinson’s Group’. Working hand-in-hand with specialty hospitals, medical professionals and support groups, Movement Mantra plays a seminal role in building public awareness of Parkinson’s disease across the GCC.

“Our Parkinson’s programme has progressed very well ever since we launched it in early 2017. We were honored to be a finalist in the 2018 Gulf Sustainability and CSR Awards for supporting the cause. Through our continuous efforts we recognize and cheer for our Parkinson’s Heroes who put up a brave fight every single day. The sustained nature of our campaign has ensured that we will continue to grow this initiative into extended formats though other partner corporate entities, across this geographical region and likely beyond. Ultimately, the campaign will lead to more public awareness on Parkinson’s among a larger audience and help understand those who are affected in a better light.,” said Ajit Alexander, CEO, VFS TasHeel.

It is estimated that globally an average of 0.15 per cent of the population suffers from Parkinson’s. There are an estimated 4,250 cases in Dubai and potentially over 72,000 in the GCC.
