Bengaluru: On September 1 2017, the Pre-University Education (PUE) department had issued a circular asking students to choose between English and Kannada as their medium of instruction. Now, the order has been revoked and students can choose any language they prefer. In a big relief to students, the government has now agreed to print the question papers in both Kannada and English.
While that was the direction of the PUE department, several requests from students and parents have poured in which left the PUE department to take a call. Recently, C Shikha, director, PUE department also forwarded the request to the government for directions.
Shika told BM, “We have received requests from students and lecturers to relax it for this year as it is already mid-session. I have forwarded it to the government for consideration.”
The members of the Legislative Council, too, had written to Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait.
The minister, on Thursday, accepted the suggestions and revoked the previous order.
Sait, in his notification, said, “Students and PUE associations had expressed their concern over this issue.Even MLC members had expressed their concerns. Now, we have asked the PUE department to print the question papers in two languages, English and Kannada.”
“This will be soon implemented and the PUE department will take necessary steps to ensure the question paper is in two languages and students can choose to write either in English or Kannada,” he added.
KT Srikantegowda, Maritibbegowda, and Ramesh Babu, the three MLCs, also expressed that their concerns were addressed at the right time by the minister.
Ramesh Babu said, “The state government passed the order and continued the old system of question paper in coming PU exams. As per the order given by Tanveer Sait, an option is open to the students to write the answers of their choice. They can write exams in Kannada or English medium.”
“We congratulate the state government and Sait, in particualr, for the right decision. We hope this decision will benefit students as well as teachers,” Ramesh Babu added.
