Mangalore, 25 October 2010: All city, service and inter-state buses are likely to keep off the roads on Wednesday seeking immediate repairs of NH 17 from Mulki to Thokkottu. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Karmika Parishat Bus Naukarara Sangha on Saturday. The Sangha will take out a padayatra from Nanthoor to Talapady, the stretch of NH 17 that is in a highly unmotorable condition.

President of the Sangha Ivan D’Souza said the organization has sought support from bus owners for this proposed bus bandh. No buses will operate on the Mulki-Talapady stretch of NH 17 on that day. It is impossible to drive on the stretch of NH 17 from Mahavir Circle up to Talapady and the bus workers and passengers alike are suffering from the apathy of the authorities concerned, who have not paid any heed to repairing the road.

The Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators Association (DKBOA) general secretary Aziz Parthipady said the bad condition of the NH 17 from Mahavir Circle up to Talapady is proving to be a nightmare both for the bus owners and the bus crew who operate on this route. "We have braved the odds and consciously not resorted to any agitation such as a bandh so far as it would inconvenience students and daily commuters alike," he said.

I E Krishne Gowda, executive engineer, National Highways division, Mangalore, told TOI that his division would take up repairs of around 600 metre stretch between Thokkottu to Talapady shortly. The stretch of NH 17 from Pumpwell Circle to Thokkottu has been handed over to National Highways Authority of India and they have assured to take up pothole filling on a priority basis and had even prepared an action plan for it.

However, unseasonal rain is affecting their serious efforts to attend to the maintenance works, he said adding that the contractor appointed by NHAI had to defer plans by a week due to the unprecedented rain in the last few days. Even the patchwork taken by them on the Udupi side of the road has worn off completely in rain that lashed the coastal districts, Gowda said urging people to give the department time.
