Rain damages nine houses in Udupi

Udupi, 23 October 2010: As many as 55 houses were flooded when heavy rain lashed Bailakere area near Mathura Chatra, Rajangana parking lot, Bannanje, Sharada Kalyan Mantapa, Kinnimulki and Padmanabha Nagar in Udupi city. Four cars were in waist-deep water at the Rajangana parking lot. Some shops were inundated at Badagupete and Kalsank.

 

The road leading to Rajangana parking lot, Kalsank-Gundibail and Badagupete were blocked. Residents blamed the authorities for the mess. They said precautionary steps were not taken to prevent flooding of houses. Baby Kundar, who lives in Bailakere, said politicians came only asking for votes.

 

Poornima, also a resident of Bailkere, said: “Even our kitchen is flooded. We have been starving since morning. Where should we go leaving our house? No rescue boat has come to this area,” she said. President of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Kiran Kumar said the flow of rainwater was strong because of heavy rainfall. Udupi tahsildar V. Prasanna said two houses each were partially damaged in Palimar, Uliyargoli and Udupi city and one house in Udyavar in Udupi taluk.

 

 

 

Paddy crop on nearly 150 acres of land had been destroyed after the fields got flooded in Athrady, Hirebettu, Neelavar, Anjar and Uliyargoli. Two temporary “ganji kendras” (gruel centres) were opened near Kamat Yatri Nivas and Sharada Kalyan Mantapa in the city while one gruel centre had been opened in Nandikur. Seventy five had found shelter in these three centres, Mr. Prasanna said.

 

According to Kundapur Taluk Office, a house was partially damaged in Belurmane while 30 acres of paddy field was inundated with rainwater at Gulvady. According to Karkala Taluk Office, one house was damaged because of rain in Inna village while the loss due to flooding of agricultural lands in the taluk had been estimated at Rs. 2.l lakh.
