English is killing Kannada – Surendra Adiga

Kaup 05 JuLY 2011: Frequent change of policies by the government is turning the Kannada Primary Schools into experimental schools. With the presence of the English medium schools, the Kannada medium schools are drying up. Preference for English, shortage of students, lack of interest in Kannada by Parents and having no efforts by the politicians, more Kannada schools will close down in the next 3 – 4 years. In this way English is killing Kannada, directly accused author Nilavara Surendra Adiga.

 

 

He was speaking on the topic “Kannada in education” in the conference “Udupi District: Future of Kannada” at Uliyaragoli Bhojaraja Vedike in Kaup Shrilakshmijanardana Sabhangana. Halnadu Prathapchandra Shetty spoke on “Kannada in Udupi destrict” and said that the usage of language changes time to time. Kannada which has a history of 2,000 years had never remained same. Konkani, Tulu, Urdu, Malayalam have influenced Kannada language, he said.


 
Peroorujaru spoke on Kannada in cultural field. Dr. Nikethana spoke on classical language and study on Udupi and said that, Tamil, Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu languages have received the classical status, and hence it becomes possible to have active literature. We have shortage of researchers, so it is important to bring awareness on this among the young generation, he said.


 
Dr. Mahabaleshwara presided over the program. On this occasion S. H. Shivarudrappa who took charge as the Deputy Director of Kannada and Cultural Department Udupi was honoured and given momento. Neelananda Nayak compeered the program and also proposed vote of thanks.
