Bantwala: The bridge built across the Addur Palguni river under Mangalore Public Works Department under the jurisdiction of Mangalore North Legislative Assembly Constituency has lost its capacity and the traffic of heavy vehicles has been banned by District Collector Mullai Mugilan.
Along with District Collector Mullai Muhilan, who has issued an order banning traffic on Addura Bridge in the background of repairing old bridges or building new bridges. On 16th August, Mangalore MP K. Brijesh Chauta, MLA Dr. Bharat Shetty, Rajesh Naik held an emergency meeting at DC’s office to discuss an alternative arrangement.
Mainly because heavy vehicle traffic has been banned at Addur Bridge and detours have been allowed on remote roads, there will be a lot of trouble for school and college students, workers and devotees in this area. As an alternative to this, he also advised to allow the movement of light vehicles of schools and colleges on the bridges.
A delegation of MPs-legislators convinced DC that if bus service is allowed on both sides of the bridge, the problem of passengers will be solved to some extent.
In the interest of the public, the traffic of other heavy vehicles including lorries will not be allowed on old or dilapidated bridges. But the Collector assured that whatever steps are taken for the benefit of the passengers will be done.
The district administration will take action so that the public is not disturbed. A bus stand will be constructed on both sides of the bridge. A meeting will be called to inform the RTO about the arrangement of buses from both sides. He informed that necessary mini buses will be arranged for the needy passengers to go from one side to the other side through the bridge.
This action has been taken in view of public safety following the advice given by experts regarding the capacity of the bridge.
Again next month, as soon as the water level decreases, the experts will conduct a survey to check the capacity of the bridge and give a report. The Collector said further action will be taken based on the report.
Additional District Collector (ADC) Santosh and Executive Engineer Amarnath and other concerned departmental officials were present in the meeting.
