Mangaluru, 27 Jul 2018: In order to discourage and stop the surge in drug abuse, Mangaluru police will be conducting widespread campaign and special programmes within the police commissionerate in the months of August and September.

This campaign will be conducted in association with different organizations, voluntary organizations and educational institutions, informed police commissioner T.R. Suresh.

Police officials and resource persons will provide information to the college students, seminars, essay, speech, painting and other competitions, road shows and others will also be conducted. Meanwhile, special operation will be conducted against drug transport, storage and usage.

Since a few years, the police have been conducting continuous operations to control the surge in drug abuse but its complete elimination has not been possible. Recently, a discussion was also held at the state’s legislative council on the surge in drug abuse in the state. The government had also directed all the police officials in the state to create a Drugs Suppression Task Force to conduct operations against drugs. In this regard, programmes have been organized against drugs in all the districts.

Increase in drug abuse

In the last three years, if the number of cases booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act are considered, there is an increase in drug abuse and transport in Mangaluru. Of them, cases on Ganja are the highest. Along with intelligence gathering, action is being taken against Ganja transport as well as on those who use it.

“We had decided earlier itself to conduct operations against drugs in Mangaluru. Now, the order has come even from the state government. Therefore, a campaign has been organized in the months of August and September within the police commissionerate. On this occasion, awareness on drugs and also special operations will be conducted,” informed T.R. Suresh, Police commissioner.
