Mangaluru, 04 Dec 2017: The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have again raised an alarm over cruelty towards buffaloes in the Kambala race.
Kambala was held after two long years here in Rama Lakshman Jodukere Kambala at Bangrakulooru on Sunday.
The PETA volunteers have submitted proofs to the board on cruelty towards animals.
Dr Manilal Valliyate, CEO, PETA India told a news daily that "The Kambala has been held in open violation of the Supreme Court rules. Moreover, they have created unwritten rules on their own. These include permit to whipping thrice and ban on cameras because of the fear that they will get caught. Whipping is whipping. It does not matter how many times you whip. Nevertheless, our volunteers have video footage to establish that the animals whipped continuously. We have hundreds of eye-witnesses to back our allegations.
Valliyate further said that they had kept track of all the three Kambalas in the districts – Moodbidri, Okadigodi and Mangaluru which were conducted after the Supreme Court lifted the ban on the sport with few mandatory rules. "The organisers and jockeys violated rules in all three events. We will surely present this in the Supreme Court."
