Chitradurga, 06 July 2010: ’’I was dogged by a sense of isolation. I have always been an orphan and did not want to remain so. Therefore I got married.’ This was the reason given by the sanyasin of Murghamutt, against whom a case of kidnap had been filed by the boy’s parents.

The couple, Niveditha alias Nanditha and Chethan, surrendered at the Channagiri police station on Monday evening after getting married at the Anjaneya temple in Shimoga. They were later brought to the police station in Chitradurga, where the couple spoke to the media.

“My interactions with people were very limited. I had no one around to take care of me or to ask me if I had eaten even when I was sick. This sense of isolation depressed me and I decided to get married,” Niveditha said.

Niveditha, who was supposed to take over as the head seer of Sirsi mutt, said she had rejected the responsibility 15 days ago. “We got married on June 6. But Chethan’s mother harassed us and separated us. When we went to get the marriage registered at the sub-registrar’s office, we were asked to produce a photograph. We therefore decided to get married again and take pictures,” she explained.

Niveditha is the adopted daughter of Nanjappa and Karibasamma of Benkikere village in Channagiri taluk.

After completing her education at Malladihalli village in Holalkere taluk, she pursued research on Basava Thathva.

The groom, Chethan, is a second year diploma student at Hiriyuru. The two said they met at the recent Kannada Sahitya Sammelana.

Dismissing the allegations of kidnap made by his mother Rathnamma, who is the BJP district unit vice-president, Chethan said: “I was not kidnapped. I love her and did this on my own accord.”

Chethan’s family tried to convince him to reconsider his decision, but the former stood by Niveditha saying he had thought thoroughly about his decision. Following this, the police dismissed the kidnap case filed by Chethan’s mother.
