Top Naval officer killed in accidental firing at Cochin

Cochin, 07 July 2010: A top Naval officer has been killed in an accidental firing at the Naval base here on Wednesday. Rear Admiral SS Jamwal was shot during a training session in the firing range.

Jamwal was the chief of the Southern Naval Command. An enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Jamwal was killed in a firing incident at INS Dronacharya, the training establishment of the Navy. Details about the incident which took place at 10.30 am are awaited. Police sources said the body has been shifted to a hospital.

 

 

Rear Admiral Jamwal was commissioned in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer on 01 Jul 1980 and had specialised in Anti Submarine Warfare.

He was an alumnus of Lawrence School Sanawar, National Defence Academy, Grechko Naval War College USSR, Defence Services Staff College Wellington and Army War College.

His afloat appointments included tenures on Indian Naval Ships Taragiri, Atul, Rajput, Ranvijay and Command of Ships Vibhuti and Kuthar, Commissioning Executive Officer of Guided Missile Destroyer Delhi and Commissioning Commanding Officer of Guided Missile Frigate Beas.

His staff appointments at IHQ MoD (Navy) included Joint Director of Staff Requirement and Director Naval Operations. Training appointments include Executive Officer at Naval Academy, Goa and Instructor at ASW School, Kochi.

He has also been the ADC to the President of India during end 1983 to 1985. On promotion to Flag Rank on 01 Sep 09, he took over as Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command.

Prior to this he was the Naval Attache at the Indian Embassy at Moscow, Russia. The Admiral is survived by his wife and two children.

Our armed force fought 5 major wars and has wealth of experience in dealing with different terrains. But this is really disappointing. Even any accidental misfire should be dealt with stringently, otherwise we will have our higher ranking officers reduced like this day by day and only Pakistan will be happy about it.
