Immigrant labourers Vs local residents : Shantipura pays for Progress

Let me tell you this true story of my native village in coastal Karnataka. Population is approximately 4,000 living on farmlands of about eight square miles. Roughly 40% are Catholics, who are good agriculturists and floriculturists. They train their men-folk into mechanics, stewards, priests and drivers and export them wherever they are needed. They also export their women-folk all over the world as nuns, nannies, nurses and secretaries.[By Philip Mudartha]

Caring with human touch, to the Psychiatric Patients by Rotary Shankerpura

Caring with human touch, to the Psychiatric Patients by Rotary Shankerpura

It was just after they had completed a century of holding the record Psychiatric Camps. I was amazed at the way these Psychiatric camps are held, receiving the patient with great respect, registration process, initial check-ups such as Pressure and then proceeding to see the doctor in orderly manner, everything is systematically organized and put the patient at ease and the final process was distribution of medicine and instructions. Pepsi IPL 2013: Kolkata Knight Riders look for repeat

Pepsi IPL 2013: Kolkata Knight Riders look for repeat

Cricket is a religion in India and IPL is now its most revered temple where the faithful flock to. Whether you are an Indian or not, one cannot deny the fact the IPL is a success story. It’s the mother of T20 leagues and a vision for modern day cricket. T20 is the cricket for everyone. As Indians, we should be proud of it. Those who are worried for the safety of test cricket should be embarrassed of themselves because there are other forces at play here that would eventually kill the oldest format of the game. Factors like the ICC themselves with their ridiculous FTP, the BCCI’s stance on DRS, Indian pitches etc.

Reflections on the suffering, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus

Easter in English, Ostern in German refer to the spring festival of the Anglo-Germanic people symbolized by the hare, [Remember: ‘rrunning with the hares and hunting with the hounds’?] ‘laying eggs.’ So, the Jewish festival of Pesach, Latin Pasca, French Paque, is celebrated by the Nordic people with ‘bunnies and eggs.’ These eggs are a boiled and painted lot today all over Europe, today globally for Easter market.

Redeeming by Death on the Cross

Redeeming by Death on the Cross

Good Friday, which falls on March 29 this year, commemorates the painful crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From earliest times it was a day of mourning. The church ceremonies on this day include reading of the Passion of Christ, reciting a string of prayers, unveiling and veneration of the Cross and communion service. The day’s celebrations are held in the afternoon. Since only one service is held on this day, to accommodate the bunched-up congregation, the celebrations are generally.. [By John B. Monteiro]

The legacy of Last Supper

The legacy of Last Supper

Last Supper takes place on Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, which falls on March 28 this year, is known for the institution of Holy Eucharist (Christa-Prasad) and the priesthood of the church. When the time came for observing the Passover, the annual feast of the Jews, commemorating the destroying angel passing over the houses of Israelites when he slew the first-born of the Egyptians, the disciples went to Jesus to ask where they should prepare for him to eat.. An Open Letter to Corrupt Politicians and Business Crooks

An Open Letter to Corrupt Politicians and Business Crooks

The government in Delhi is on ventilator for a long time. Scams after scams have sapped its energy for years. Corruption is talk of the town. A silly mango man is on fast in Delhi and refuses to pay electricity and water bills. He says he belongs to AAM party. He threatens to bring down corruption. I don’t know if our people will vote his party to power, because like you, Your Excellency, we are all corrupt. No exceptions, we have all paid bribes. In return you have allowed.. Palm Sunday Showcases Christ’s Kingship

Palm Sunday Showcases Christ’s Kingship

Christians mark their Holy Week starting on Palm Sunday (March 24 this year) and concluding on Easter Sunday which celebrates the resurrection of Christ on the third day after his death on the cross. Palm Sunday showcases the kingship of Christ and commemorates his triumphant riding into Jerusalem sitting on an ass. The Biblical narrative of this event is brief.As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took his 12 disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem;

My tryst with liberation theology, Marxists, and Argentines

My tryst with liberation theology, Marxists, and Argentines

Pope Francis gives me an excuse to write about Latin America in general and Argentina in particular. My fascination of Latin America goes back to two years of living with Jesuits in Mangalore during my pre-university education. I got access to a lot of periodicals, books and pamphlets that otherwise I would not have had. That is a debt to Jesuits I owe and some more. But that is another story... [By Philip Mudartha]

Moodubelle: Nomad fishermen from Chikmagalur in search of livelihood

I had seen them last year and even year before last camping at the ground on the northern bank of Belle River at Poydapadi closer to the bridge. A band of around twenty persons, distributed in five families cooking their food under the open sky and making one of the corners of the open ground as their temporary home. I was under the impression that they were part of a nomadic tribe moving from place to place, may be in search of temporary employment and..[By Eugene DSouza]

ICYM Modankap enjoys an Amazing picnic at Sita Falls

To go to Sita Falls either we should have our own vehicle, car is better if small crowd or bus preferably for the large crowd, family get-together or picnics. Prior to reaching Sita Falls there is a small creek to cross and if the water is less then you must consider yourself lucky to cross if not, we must walk round the creek in a mud road for about 4 km rough road but it is worth to walk in group enjoying the beautiful nature, chirping birds, blue skies, wonderful nature. We reached Hebri at about 11am. But luckily since the water was less, our bus could cross the creek easily and that not only saved our time..[By Wilma Lavina]
