The Law of School and the Law of Farm

The Law of School and the Law of Farm

In this chapter 5 of education series, I will begin with a self-appraisal. What makes me think that I can advise teachers? I have never been a professional teacher, but for a short stint of coaxing teenager girls to study Physics, Chemistry and Math at a Bombay high school. My predicament is akin to that of Catholic Clergy, who in their celibate bliss, double as marriage counselors. Ignorance is bliss, especially in consulting and advising business.. Travelogue: ‘Wonders of Europe’ - London in a Day

Having toured some parts of India, especially the Himalayan region, I had been waiting for an opportunity to travel to some of the European countries and see the places and monuments that one normally views in pictures and other media. Being a student and teacher of European History, I used to visualize those aspects which I learnt and taught and dreamt that sometimes in future I would be able to see personally some of those places and monuments [By Dr Eugene DSouza]

Tuitions Classes, Coaching Centers, Tutorials: Boon or Bane?

Tuitions Classes, Coaching Centers, Tutorials: Boon or Bane?

This is a standard job description for hiring school teachers: To impart knowledge and learning skills to the students in his/her assigned class in a manner that meets the professional standards of the school. Most importantly, the teacher should have the love of educating children, the love of learning and the ability to impart a love of learning to children. The word ‘love’ occurs three times. That is appropriate if teachers practice what they accept while signing up for the job.[By Philip Mudartha]

Basic Education: Challenges and Opportunities

Basic Education: Challenges and Opportunities

The primary schools enroll students in Class 1 and pass them out at Class 5. Small and even remote villages have them. It is no longer necessary for children aged 6 to 11 to travel far from their homes. Enrolment in government and aided private schools is free; there is no tuition fee. Teachers in these schools are paid directly from public treasury according to pay-scales fixed periodically by government education authorities. However, the student-teacher ratio is fixed at 40:1. The only difference is the ownership and management of school infrastructure. [By Philip Mudartha]

Finally found some time and this is my first article on these subjects in a series of articles to be written and published on this issue.. [By Philip Mudartha]

Take care or Take charge - The women who are changing the face of rural education in Shankarnarayana

Take care or Take charge - The women who are changing the face of rural education in Shankarnarayana

Way back in 1997, I was a 13 year old studying in 7th standard in a private school in Kundapura. I had a classmate Mohan who used to travel from a place called Shankarnarayana. The place sounded remote and seemed to be at the farthest corner of the world. The final exams got over in March and we were expecting our results sometime in April end and as expected Mohan stood first – not only in the school but in the whole district. The summer vacations passed on and I was all geared up to begin my high school studies in the same school. The first day was fun as l met all my old friends.. [By Anil DSouza]
