Chhattarpur(MP), 28 May 2010: Even as the molester of teenaged Ruchika Girhotra-former Haryana DGP S.P.S. Rathore-finally got punishment for his heinous crime that led to her suicide, another incident of suicide by two sisters humiliated by police in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhattarpur district came to light on Thursday.

The humiliation of the sisters had started when one of them was harassed after being seen with a boyfriend. The couple was humiliated and threatened by the men in khaki.

Before dying, the victim had said that she was asked to strip and she was filmed in the nude with the boy. The police also threatened to make a blue film of the couple and demanded Rs 10,000 from them. What forced the girl to take this extreme step, she had revealed in her statement on May 22.

"We were going with a friend to meet another friend. Our car broke down and we stopped. Two policemen came and started beating us. They also started forcing us. They took off our clothes and tried to make a video. They said they would make our blue film. They also took our mobile numbers and said we would have to meet them whenever they called us," the victim had said.

Unable to bear the shame, the girl and her sister approached senior police officials on Saturday. The intervention of SP and ASP ensured a probe, which nailed constables Arvind Patel and K.L. Tiwari. But their problems did not end there. The two suspended policemen began threatening their family.

Kamlesh Singh Patel, who lived in the girls’ neighbourhood, said, "The police went to their house and threatened them. The girls were not at home that time. They later committed suicide."

Fed up with the threats and insults, the two sisters decided to put an end to the misery of the family by consuming poison. The police, however, continued to remain in denial.

Chhattarpur additional SP Sunil Tiwari said, "We will have to see why the policemen visited the family. The matter was under investigation, so maybe they went to deliver some summon or warrant. Or maybe they went to take some missing signatures. An initial investigation was on and their statements had to be taken. So I don’t know why they visited the family. We are still trying to find out."

In Girhotra’s case it took her family 20 years to send the man responsible for her death behind bars. It remains to be seen how long it would take to ensure justice for the two sisters.
