Kolkata, 09 June 2010: The father of Kolkata boy Rouvanjit Rawla, who committed suicide after allegedly being punished at his school La Martiniere for Boys, alleges teachers had been targeting his son for long.

Ajay Rawla accused the school, which figures among Kolkata’s best but has been in controversy recently, of not listening to his complaints.

Rouvanjit, a Class VIII student, hung himself at his home on February 12 after being “humiliated and caned in school”.

Kolkata police, on a complaint from Rawla, have started a case of abetment to suicide against the school principal and four teachers for Rouvanjit’s death.

The case was lodged after Rawla lodged an FIR late on Monday night. The matter is also with the National Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights (NCPCR), whose officials visited the school on Tuesday to investigate what led to Rouvanjit’s death.

On Wednesday, Rawla told CNN-IBN Rouvanjit’s harassment began after a teacher felt humiliated because of him.

Rawla alleged a teacher slapped Rouvanjit for “whistling” but his classmates stood up and said that he was innocent and didn’t know how to whistle. “The teacher had to apologise to Rouvanjit in front of the whole class. Between that day and to Rouvanjit ’s passing the teacher wouldn’t miss out an opportunity to get after him,” said Rawla.

Rawla claimed that he had complained to the school board about Rouvanjit’s death but it instead “axed” two members (Neil O’ Brien and K S David) who had suggested investigating the matter.

“The single this for me as a parent that this horror should not be visited upon by any other parent or child.”

The Telegraph newspaper of Kolkata reports that Rawla has accused five teachers of the school of “torturing” his son. “Ajay Rawla has accused five teachers of the school, including the principal, Sunirmal Chakravarthi, of misbehaving with his son and torturing him. He alleged that they drove him to commit suicide,” an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station told the newspaper.

On May 19, a La Martiniere teacher was arrested for demanding a laptop from a student’s family to promote him to the next class.
