Mangaluru, 07 Apr 2017: A campaign to rejuvenate water bodies and aquifers will be embarked upon in the city in 8 nature ponds/lakes that are in disused state @ Rs 8 crore, said MLA J R Lobo.
MLA Lobo was speaking at ground breaking ceremony to develop 6 nature ponds/lakes, here on Friday, April 7. ‘These nature ponds will be rejuvenated with the funds form state minor irrigation department,’ said MLA Lobo.
These lakes had abundant water till a few decades ago, while owing to its misuse and neglect; wild vegetation have grown and silt accumulated over the years. Meanwhile, efforts will be made to restore the lakes to its original glory, added MLA Lobo.
These lakes will be cleared of silt and barrier wall will be built around it, in order to supply drinking water to locals and livestock. It will also boost the aquifers’, said MLA Lobo.
The lakes: Bairadikere, Gujjarakere, Kumbalakere in Shantinagar-Bajal, lake in Prashantbagh-Kembar, bund will be build nearby Bhatrakatta-Niddel, lake at Kadri Jogi mutt, lake at Doctors Colony, Kaibattal-Kadri will be rejuvenated at the first stage, said MLA Lobo.
He also urged the minor irrigation department officials to identify the boundaries of lakes, and clear the encroachment if any also take precaution not to pollute the water bodies.
Swami Nirmalananda of Kadri Jogi mutt, corporators Sumayya, Prakash, D K Ashok Kumar and Ashraf Bajal, municipal steering Committee president Abdul Rauf, APMC member Bharatesh, KSRTC director T K Sudhir, Dennis, Krutin, Ahmed Bava and irrigation officials were present.
