Bantwal, 26 Nov 2016: The order will be issued shortly banning paddy cultivation on the shore of Netravati River after January. The criminal cases will be registered on those farmers who grow paddy in violation of order, cautioned Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Jagadeesha.
Addressing media persons after visiting the lands that are likely to be submerged owing to the construction of new vented dam at Thumbay, near here on Friday, November 25, DC Dr Jagadeesha said farming on the shore of Netravati River will be banned, in order to supply drinking water to Mangaluru city that gets water from Thumbay vented dams.
Its owing to acute shortage of drinking water experienced in Mangaluru town during peak summer, 5 meter water level will be maintained in the new vented dam at Thumbay. The survey of likely submergible lands is nearly completed. The compensations will be disbursed to the victims of submergible lands, said DC Dr Jagadeesha.
Mangaluru municipal officers Gokuldas Nayak and Naresh Shenoy, KUWS chief executive engineer Mahadevayya and others were present.
