Bantwal, 27 Oct 2016: A sand labourer drowns in Palguni rivulet at Mullarapatna, here on Wednesday, October 26 morning, fearing the police team raiding the illegal sand mining spot.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Sharif, a resident of Margadangady, Muttur.
The locals gathered on the spot alleging the police were responsible for Sharif to jump into the rivulet creating tense situation.
The police officers including DK district SP Bhushan G Borase and more policemen from other stations are camping at the spot as precautionary measure.
Bantwal sub-division DySP Ravish along with policemen form Bantwal rural station raided the sand mining spot on Palguni rivulet at Mullarpatna, near here on the instructions of SP Bhushan. The sand miners fearing the police fled from the scene, while Sharif who never knew swimming jumped into the water and was drown.
The local diver Mohammed with the help of fire brigade retrieved the dead body of Sharif after several hours underneath the hanging bridge far away.
The angry mob pelted stones on the police jeep alleging the police were responsible for the drowning of Sharif. They also banned clicking pics or video recording by police and others except the media persons. They hurled slogans against the police and followed the dead body transported in an ambulance to state-run hospital in Bantwal town. The autopsy was done amidst chaos outside the hospital by the angry mob.
