Moodubelle, 30 Apr 2016: The Konkani play “Sadeum Moriye” highlighting the joys and sorrows of Mother Mary, Mother of Jesus was staged in the specially erected stage in the premises of St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle on Saturday, 30 April 2016 at 7 pm. The play had its maiden presentation at Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi on 20 March 2016.
Prior to the presentation of the play a short stage programme was organised. Rev, Fr, Fred Mascarenhas, Dean of Udupi Varado was the chief guest. Other dignitaries included Rev. Fr. Denis D’Sa-PRO of Udupi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Parish Priest of Moodubelle, Walter Monteriro-writer of the play, Alphonse Alva and Mrs, Latha D’Mello, Vice President and Secretary of Parish Pastoral Council and Gracian Buthello, Secretary of Udupi Parish Pastoral Council.
Following the welcome address by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Gracian Buthello in his introductory remarks narrated the circumstances that led to the presentation of the play.
The writer of the play, Walter Monteiro and director Prof. Vincent Alva were honoured by presenting them shawl and memento.
Fr. Fred Mascarenhas in his message said that the presentation of the play “Sadeum Moriye” is the gift of the faithful to Mother Mary. He appreciated the efforts taken by writer Walter Monteiro and director Prof. Vincent Alva for the successful presentation of the play. He also mentioned about the contribution of Fr. Clement Mascarenhas to the play in the form of music and songs.

The play began at 7.30 pm. with the theme dance presented by the students of St. Mary’s English Medium School, Kannarpady, Udupi. The shepherds dance during the scene depicting the birth of Jesus was presented by the youth of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi.
The play “Sadeum Moriye” is centred around the life of Mother Mary. The play starts with the scene of ‘Annunciation’ and covers the five ‘Joyful Mysteries’ followed by great sacrifice of her son Jesus Christ on the cross. The penultimate scene of crucifixion and lamentation of Mary was effectively depicted and powerfully enacted. In the final scene Mary gives message to modern world.
The entire play is well written by Walter Monteiro after a lot of research and study of Holy Scriptures. Prof. Vincent Alva has used all his imagination and skill in directing the play. All the actors have done justice to their respective roles.
Stage setting, sound and light effects as well as costumes were done in an appropriate way relevant to various scenes of the play.
The actors included Aishal D’Souza as young Mary, Anita Saldanha as elder Mary, Daron Quadros as Joseph, Revan Dias as child Jesus, Sunil D’Souza as grown up Jesus, Ronald Saldanha as Herod and other actors in different roles.
The response of the capacity audience to the play was that of reverent silence grasping each and every dialogue of the characters. No one left the premises till the end of the two hours twenty minutes long play.
