Bantwal, 27 Apr 2015: The visitors were stunned to see varieties of products made out of jackfruit. Those who knew of a few products made out of jackfruit were surprised to see ice cream made out of jackfruit and other global varieties. Yes, it’s the rare event witnessed during the Jackfruit Shandy organized at Navarang Nivas, Panemangaluru, here by jackfruit enthusiasts of Bantwal.
The veteran medical practitioner and Karingana resident Dr K S Kamat inaugurated the Shandy by plucking a jackfruit from the tree.
Dr Kamat appreciated the efforts of Mounish Mallya for taking the leadership in organizing the first ever Jackfruit Shandy in the taluk. He also advised the farmers to grow jackfruit, lemon, mango, drumsticks etc to diversify income.
Jackfruit has many uses. It’s used in making varieties of delicacies as it has been proved by our ancestors, said Dr Kamat.
The retired forest officer Gabriel Veigas inaugurated the programme and stressed on the need to develop the varieties of jackfruit.
The horticulture assistant director P Sanjeev Naik said that jackfruit growers union availed state facilities to process jackfruit and gained good profit by producing and marketing different delicacies.
The students of Sahyadri Engineering College have demonstrated halva making machine out of jackfruit and also chips making machine.
H Sundar Rao welcomed the gathering. Na Karant Peraje compered the programme and proposed vote of thanks.
The stalls put up at the venue made brisk business on the occasion.
