Mangalore, 29 July 2014: The Catholics of Madantyar pained by the letters and books published defaming the priest and the Christian beliefs protested urging the arrest of the people resposible for the deformation.The protest was lead by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement of Madantyar.
On Tuesday 22nd July a complaint was filed against John Prabhu and Gerald Correa and few other members of the organization called Samanvaya in Pujalkatte police station for tarnishing the image of the parish priest of Madantyar Fr. Lawrence D’souza and other beliefs of the Christianity.
The FIR was lodged under non-bailable sections and the accused used to visit the police station daily and the police had not arrested them in spite of the body warrant.
Hence yesterday when the members of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement(ICYM) had visited the police station the accused were found speaking to the officers in the station. Looking at the ICYM members the accused managed to escape from the police station. Raged by the carelessness of the Punjalkatte police the parishioners of the Madantyar Church staged a protest in the police station urging the arrest of the accused. The protestors left at 8 in the night only when the police promised to arrest the accused in three days.
The protestors informed that they will close the shops of the Madantyar and stage vigorous protest if the police do not arrest the accused within the time limit.
It is said that the parish priest Fr. Lawrence pained by the incident has refused to give any statement.
Background of the protest:
Anonymous letters were sent to every house of the Catholic families of Madantyar stating that the parish priest has utilized the funds of the church to his personal use and he has illegal relationships with the nun’s in the church.
A book named Smanvaya from the Samanvaya organization was printed and distributed among the catholics of Madantyar defaming the catholic rituals and beliefs. The catholics of Madantyar suspect that the people of Samanvaya are also behind the anonymous letters.
