Puttur: Collaborative Leaders are effective - Rector Fr Martis

Puttur, 21 Jul 2014: Leader is the one who knows the way, leads the way and shows the way. Leaders are made, nobody is born as a leader, said Fr Joseph Martis, rector of St Joseph Inter Diocesan Seminary, Mangalore.

 

Fr Martis was speaking after inaugurating Students Council of St Philomena College during the function held at silver jubilee memorial hall of College here on Monday July 21.

 

 

Fr Martis said there are 4 types of leaders - dominators, avoiders, accommodators and collaborators. The three being poor leaders and the last one being the powerful leader who is bold, ethical,  challenging and has a vision, said Fr Martis. He advised the office bearers of Students’ Council to be collaborators and elicit co-operation among the students and teachers.

 

Fr Martis further said, ‘Leaders should be like the camels with a long neck to foresee and a big heart with the kindness, empathy and ability to assess the situation.’

 

Fr Martis expressed concern over rise in crimes in society by laying emphasis on educating the students along with their studies.

 

The student representatives Srinivas S Tamboli - presidnet, Joiston Vinroy D’Costa - secretary, Radhika Suresh - joint secretary along with the class representatives took the oath and pledged to work for the student development with close collaboration with the management. The College principal Professor Leo Norohna administered the oath taking ceremony.

 

Mangalore diocesan Catholic Board of Education (CBE) secretary and Mai De Deus Institutions former correspondent Fr Gerald D’Souza was felicitated recognition of his selfless service to the Mai De Deus Institutions and society at large. During his tenure there was a large scale all round growth and the institutions will remember and cherish his contributions. The citation address was read by the student welfare officer Bharathi Rai.

 

Fr Gerald D’Souza shared his 7-year of his experience in this institution and wished everyone a bright future.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Mai De Deus Institutions correspondent Fr Alfred John Pinto said, ‘All human beings require 3 things – faith, hope and love. When you love someone help them to grow mentally, heartily, spiritually and to love others like you love yourself.’

 

The College campus director Fr Antony Prakash Monterio, St Philomena Pre-University College principal Fr Vijay Lobo, alumni association president R Jayakumar Rai, parents – teachers association (PTA) president Mohammad Badaganur were also present.

 

The students’ council president Srinivas Tamboli welcomed the gathering.  Radhika Suresh proposed the vote of thanks. Joyline M Rodrigues compered the programme.
