Mangalore: Victor Rodrigues Memorial Award conferred on Dr Edward Nazareth

 Mangalore, 21 Jul 2014: The late Victor Rordigues memorial award that was constituted to confer on a distinguished Konkani writer for his/her extraordinary contributions to Konkani literature was presented to renowned writer and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Edward Nazareth during a function held at Samanvaya hall, Urwastore, here on Sunday July 20.

 
Samanvaya executive director Fr Pius Fidelis Pinto conferred the award to Dr Edward on the occasion.

 
Fr Pius in his presidential address recalled his association with the renowned Konkani writer, novelist and short story writer the late Victor Rodrigues.

 
Fr Pius said, ‘We were really blessed to organize many programmes along with him. Even though, he was a great writer his simplicity and humbleness always inspired us. At this moment I feel his presence.’

 
Speaking on the occasion, Konkani writer Dolphy Cascia said, ‘Dr Edward Nazareth is gem to Konkani literature. Through his social and health oriented writings, he has made remarkable difference in the community. Konkani language is lucky to have Dr Edward. He is an accomplished writer in most of sphere of Konkani literature hence he deserved this award.’

 

 

Dr Edward in his acknowledgement said, ‘With the award I have been given responsibility to serve the Konkani language furthermore. And I thank everyone for being present at this auspicious moment.’

 
Speaking about late Victor Rodrigues, Dr Edward said, ‘Victor Rodrigues was a man of wisdom and simplicity. He never compromised with the bad elements in the society. His writing was so effective; we used to wait for the magazines to read his writings. If he was present here he would have been surely happy.’

 
The Victor Rodrigues Memorial Awards of 2012 and 2013 were conferred on Manu Bahrain and Dolphy Cascia respectively.

 
Samanvaya benefactors Antony Timothy D’Souza, director Fr Ronald Coutinho, late Victor Rodrigues’s wife Celine Rodrigues,  and others were present at the occasion.

 
The award of 2014 comprised Rs 10,000 cash, a certificate and memento.
