Mangalore, 20 Jul 2014: ‘Body and mind of a person are inseparable. If both are treated with equal priority, then it leads to the complete treatment,’ said Fr Patrick Rodrigues, the director of Father Muller Medical College Hospital here.

Fr Patrick was speaking after inaugurating ‘Muller PsyCon 2014’, a continuing medical education (CME) programme on Psychosomatic Medicine that was organized by department of psychiatry, Father Muller Medical College, at their decennial hall here on Sunday July 20.

Fr Patrick further said, ‘Since ancient times, humans discovered that the two entities mind and body work complementary to each other. If one is affected, then it will affect the functioning of the other,’ said Fr Patrick.

‘Today psychosomatic department has turned into a sub-speciality department. It is an area where there should be an interaction between a physician, a psychiatrist and a social worker along with specialists of many other departments. The effective interaction of all the above specialists will lead to the healing of the patient,’ said Fr Patrick.

When it comes to the treatment of psychosomatic patients one has to consider the faith that patient has on God. If two patients of the same disease are treated with same medicine the person with faith will be not only be able to bear the pain but will respond to the medication effectively, added Fr Patrick.
