Mangalore, 18 July 2014: Numerous students gathered in protest here on Thursday demanding immediate action in apprehending the culprits behind the alleged murder of a college student at Byndoor recently.
Three days after the 17-year-old girl was reported missing, her decomposed body was found in the woods at Thoodalli near Byndoor on July 12.
With rape also suspected, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad – who staged a road block protest near Besant College here on Thursday – said the incident was reminiscent of the rape-and-murder of a 17-year-old girl at Ujire in October 2012.
Atrocities on women
ABVP members threatened to intensify their agitation if the police failed to conduct a fair investigation and apprehend all those involved.
The protestors further alleged that the government had turned a blind eye to the increasing incidents of atrocities on women reported across the State.
Candlelight vigil
Meanwhile, on Thursday evening, the All Colleges Students’ Union gathered in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Lalbagh for a candle light vigil for the victim.
The Union demanded “maximum possible” sentence to those behind the alleged murder and asked the government to initiate steps to curtail the “increasing” incidents of crimes against college girls.
