Bangalore: St John’s Director Fr Lawrence felicitated on conferring Kempe Gowda Award

Bangalore, Jul 9, 2014 : Fr Dr Lawrence D’Souza, director of St John’s National Academy Health Sciences was felicitated by the staff of his administrative office at the St John’s Hospital and Medical College here recently, on being conferred Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s prestigious Kempe Gowda Award.
Fr Lawrence who is busy preparing for the finale of the golden jubilee celebrations of the St John’s Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday August 9, was among the 187 persons, who were conferred Kempe Gowda award by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The union fertilizers minister H N Ananth Kumar, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, IT and Wakf minister Roshan Baig were among the dignitaries present during the conferring of Kempe Gowda Award ceremony.
The other prominent awardees included centurion lexiconist Professor G Venkatasubbaiah, cricketer Vinay Kumar, former international hockey player Ashish Ballal, international swimmer Khushi Dinesh, cycling champion Krishna Naikodi, film makers K S L Swamy and Sai Prakash, heart specialist Dr Srikanth Shetty.
The sixty-six-year-old Fr Lawrence, who was functioning as director-designate of St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences from March 1 2008, formally took over as director on September 1 2008. He has been serving as director of St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences since the past 6 years.
Fr Lawrence was born at Pernal in Udupi district on November 28 1948 and ordained as priest on May 5 1977.
Fr Lawrence obtained B Sc degree from St Aloysius College, Mangalore. He did his post-graduation in philosophy from the Karnataka University in Dharwad and post-graduate diploma in business management from St Aloysius College. He also holds a LLB degree from SDM Law College, and also completed his MA in religious studies and PhD in administration and supervision from Fordham University, New York.
Fr Lawrence has the rare distinction of serving as the Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church, New York and Sacred Heart Church, New York, from 1992 and 1998. He also served as secretary of Mangalore diocesan Catholic Board of Education for 7 years.
Fr Lawrence had also served as administrator of Father Muller Medical College, Father Muller College of Nursing, Mangalore for 8 years.
