Mangalore, 05 Jul 2014 (TOI): At a time when his peers were enjoying their retirement life, NK Mohandas, 58, went back to college to pursue his dream— a degree in law.

A retired district education officer from Kerala, Mohandas, successfully completed his law degree a few days ago from SDM law College here.

He embarked upon his ambitious journey in June 2011. "When I completed my BSC from University College, Mangalore, in 1978, I wanted to study law. But four of my close friends egged me on to do BEd and I finished the course in June 1979. Soon after, I got a high school teacher’s job at Government High School, Uduma, Kasaragod. There was no restriction for Kannadigas to take up teaching jobs there provided the degree was a recognized one. So my dream took a backseat.’’

His career flourished. Mohandas was promoted in 2002 as the head master of Government High School, Uppala. In 2004, he became the principal of Government Higher Secondary School at Uppala. He went on to become an assistant education officer and then district education officer in 2009, a post equivalent to that of DDPI in Karnataka, before attaining superannuation in March 2011. In between he completed his MA in sociology from Karnataka Open University, Mysore.

So, how was his first day at the college? ``Terrible and I was lost. I had to listen to a lecture by a girl who was of my daughter’s age. The thick law books made me giddy since I was as science student,’’ said Mohandas.

Mohandas got over his initial shortcomings to compete with his 21-year-old classmates and passed with 54%.

To join the course also there was a hitch. The Bar Council had brought in an age bar— 30 for general category students and 35 for SC/ST.

As luck would have it Supreme Court stayed it and he joined the course in June 2011.

At present, he works as a practical trainee with Vivekananda Paniyala Associates. ``I want to use advocacy for social cause. I also want to pursue the alternative dispute resolution system which lays emphasis on solving disputes amicably," said Mohandas.

He also wants to use his law degree to serve the cause of Kannada linguistic minorities in Kasaragod.
