Panaji, 14 April 2014 (PTI): A goods train derailed on the Konkan Railway route near Ukashi station in Maharashtra this morning, disrupting rail traffic.

Four-five bogies of the goods train derailed in the tunnel near Ukashi railway station, between Sangameshwar and Nivsar at around 8.15 am, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd’s (KRCL) Public Relations Manager Baban Ghatge said, adding no one was injured.

Three trains were cancelled and around 10 diverted after the mishap.

Ukashi is about 19 km away from Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra.

The work for restoration of the track is underway on a war footing. According to initial estimates, it may take more than 10 hours to restore it as the derailed section is inside the tunnel, official sources said.

Following the derailment, the KRCL cancelled three trains including the Mandovi Express and the Konkan Kanya, which were supposed to head towards Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) from Margao.

The up and down trains of Matsyagandha Express, running between Mangalore to Mumbai’s Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), have also been cancelled, the spokesman said.

Due to the disruption on the route, around 10 trains have been diverted through Panvel, Pune, Miraj, Londa and Margao, bypassing the affected section of the track.

Besides, the Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express leaving from Mumbai CST, Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthpuram Rajdhani Express leaving from Delhi, LTT-Kochuveli (near Thiruvananthapuram) Garib Rath Express leaving from Mumbai and CST-Mangalore Mangalore Express leaving from Mumbai have been diverted.

Similarly, up trains including the Ernakulam-LTT AC Duranto Express, Ernakulum-Ajmer Marusagar Express, Mangalore-CST Express, Kuchuveli-LTT Express, Tirunelveli-Hapa Express, Kochuveli-Chandigarh Kerala Sampark Kranti Express were also diverted through Margao, Londa, Pune and Panvel.

The KRCL has also arranged for ferrying passengers between Sangameshwar and Ratnagiri station for the Thiruvananthpuram-LTT Netravati Express, the Ernakulum-Nizamuddin Mangala Express and the Amritsar-Kochuveli Express trains. The passengers of these trains would be accommodated in other trains going to the destinations.

The authorities also announced that the Sawantwadi-Diva passenger and Dadar-Margao-Dadar Janashatabdi Express have been partially cancelled.
