Karnataka budget: Boost to Udupi’s education sector

Mangalore, 14 Feb 2014 (TOI): Udupi got a slice of the budget pie too, with the CM announcing the setting up of an advanced research centre under Mangalore University using funds under the Rashtriya Uchchatara Shikshana Abhiyana (RUSA) to promote development of human resources in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and other cutting-edge technology areas. Karwar will get a central university with funding from RUSA as well.

 

 

 

An indirect scheme may provide some relief to victims of endosulfan. The CM’s announced ’Niramaya’ health insurance scheme for children belonging to BPL families and suffering from autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities, under the National Trust Act, 1999. The scheme provides beneficiaries with medical insurance coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh per year based on a one-time payment of Rs 250 as premium. The estimated outlay for this is Rs 1.12 crore.

 

There was something in store for Christians as well, with Rs 125 crore being provided under the Christian development scheme for repairs and renovation of churches, community halls, skill development, incentives to students, orphanages, old-age homes and other activities.

 

Shiradi Ghat finds a mention: The already announced permanent repair work of Shiradi Ghat Road at a cost of Rs 95 crore found a mention in the budget. The work will be completed in 18 months.

 

Another project oft mentioned that was mentioned in the budget was to develop 18.5 km of NH-48 at Shiradi Ghat section for Rs 2,200 crore with assistance from Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).

 

The government’s request for relaxation of coastal regulation zone guidelines from the ministry of environment and forests to tap the tourist potential in the coastal area of Karnataka to develop 42 beaches and four islands should bring relief to fishermen, if it is accepted.

 

Fishermen get something to cheer in Karnataka budget

 

The Karnataka state budget had something for the fishermen to cheer about. The total provision in the budget for fisheries sector is Rs 221 crore for the year 2014-15, which also includes 3,000 houses for homeless fishermen under Mathyashraya scheme and for subsidised diesel.

 

The call centre based extension service to fishermen directly by consolidating information available at various levels to facilitate free communication in Karnataka of details of governmental schemes, market prices, potential fishing zone and weather information were welcomed by fishermen here. Under the scheme, SIM cards will be provided to fishermen. The allocation for the scheme is Rs 1 crore during 2014-15.

 

The proposals to improve hygienic conditions in eight fishing harbours and 20 fish landing centers with financial assistance from National Fisheries Development Board as per the standards set by the European Union for import of food items; transparent services through Fisheries Resource Information Management System (FRIMS); Information on beneficiary approval, auction of fishing rights in tanks and fish seed production centers being made available online in phased manner through FRIMS; Jetty expansion to be taken up at Fish Landing Centre at Tengingudi of Bhatkal Taluk in Uttar Kannada District and construction of outer harbour with break water near Madikala of Uppunda village in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district was also in line with fishermen’s demand.
