Mangalore: St Theresa’s School – Annual Sports Day 2013

Mangalore, 7 Oct 2013: The annual sports day of St Theresa School was held at the Mangala Stadium in a frolicsome atmosphere here on Sunday October 5.

The Sports Day commenced at 08:45 am with the welcoming of the chief guest Supreet Raj, a sportsman passionate about high jump. He holds records and has won gold medals in LIC and Mangalore University meets.

Bethany educational Society secretary and St Theresa’s School correspondent Sr Rose Celine, Bethany Mother House superior  Sr Sandhya BS and parents teachers Association vice president Lynnette Fernandes were the other dignitaries present on the dais.
The guests were received with guard of honour by the school band and were led to the dais. The formal programme began with a prayer song, ‘Shout to the Lord,’ by the school choir.

The principal Sr Premitha welcomed every one present in the stadium. The welcome dance by a group of graceful students was a feast to the eyes.

The  chief guest  was introduced to the different marching contingent viz. the Blue ,Green ,Red and Yellow House and then was asked to receive the salute from the parade followed by hoisting of the school flag and lighting of the Sports Torch. Thus the gloom that had descended due to clouds was dispelled and the enthusiasm of the students reverberated the stadium.
Sr Rose Celine spoke to the students about discipline being one of the main aspects of student life. She said that the students should follow the Core Values very closely in order to be successful and build a humane society.

The event was marked by a string of spectacular performances presented by the little champs of Class III, IV and V, who with their colorful dresses and props took everyone’s breath away!

 

 

The chief guest Supreet then addressed the students wherein he outlined briefly the value of sports and games in student’s life and possibilities of career options in this field. He stressed on the need for students to avail all the opportunities that are at their disposal in school for their all round development.

The sporting events began with the students of the four Houses participating in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m races,Long jump and Shot-put. The grand finale was the 4x100m  Relay which made everyone jump out of their seats with excitement . The air was filled with exhilaration and cheer. Though the rain was a deterrent but even that could not dampen the spirits of the young sporting enthusiasts.

The valedictory function was graced by Sabita Misquit, corporator of Shivabagh ward number, Mangalore City Corporation , who addressed the audience on the need for sports in students’ lives these days . The prizes were given away to the winners of the day by the chief guest and the Principal.

 
It was an emotional moment for all Theresians to watch the School Flag being lowered. As a conclusion, the National Anthem was sung by the young and the old. Thus an eventful day came to a close with memories to be cherished for times to come.
Apart from teaching us good values such as sportsmanship, team-spirit, co-operation, discipline in the field, etc. Annual Sports Day makes school life lively, interesting, enjoyable and memorable.
