Mangalore, 24 Aug 2013 : The Devanagari version of Saiba Bhogos, Konkani novel by legendary Konkani novelist V J P Saldanha was released during a function titled Khadap Sahitik Bhandar organized by Karavali Konkans, at St Sebastian’s platinum jubilee hall, Bendore, here on Friday August 23. The book wass published by Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation of World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar, Mangalore.

The well known Konkani novel authored by Khadap in Kannada script many years ago was translated into Devanagiri recently by Konkani poet and columnist Melvyn Rodrigues and his wife Avrel Rodrigues was released here on Friday evening.
Dr Kiran Budkuley was the chief guest released the book ‘Saiba Bhogos’, along with the well known Konkani dignitaries.
Vishwa Konkani Sardar Basti Vaman Shenoy, famous Konkani poet Uday Bhembre, VJP’s son Ransom Saldanha, Karavali Konkans secretary Claude D’Souza, Melvyn Rodrigues and his wife Avrel were present at the dais.

Earlier, the Konkani dignitaries paid tribute to Khadap by showering floral petals on his portrait.
Melvyn Rodrigues in his welcome address thanked Karavali Milan for organizing this important forum which attempts to introduce VJP’s literary works to people. VJP’s contribution to Konkani literature was as a dramatist, novelist, short story writer, poet, litterateur, journalist and musician immeasurable.

Further he said, ‘It was not easy to translate this book from Kannada script to Devanagiri script but I took a bold step and successfully translated with support from the World Konkani Center and several others.’
Dr Kiran Budkuley in his chief guest’s address said that the great writers like, VJP Saldhana, Cha Fra D’Costa and many others have contributed a lot to Konkani literature but their works have not reached majority of the people. Due to script difference, there is a huge gap between various Konkani speaking people.  However, the difference is somewhat reduced by translating this book by Melvyn and Avrel and they have done a good job.  He hoped that more such attempts would be made in the future as well.

Basti Vaman Shenoy also endorsed views of Dr Kiran Budkuley.  In his address Vaman Shenoy said that the main effort to preserve literary works has been done by poet Melvyn Rodrigues and his wife by transliterating the book. Since 2008 World Konkani Center has been involved in translating good Konkani books to other languages and thus spreads the Konkani literature to others communities.

‘Transliterating a book is not everyone’s cup of tea but Melvyn and Averyl have done a good job and the outcome will have a great impact in the progress of the Konkani language,’ emphasized Vaman Shenoy.

In the second part of the programme, eminent Konkani writers - Dr Edward Nazareth, Professor Hanumanth Chopdekar and Edwin J F D’Souza presented papers on VJP’s literature.

Konkani poet and writer Vally Vogga, in his presidential address explained a few things on the literary works of late VJP Saldanha. He said, ‘VJP Saldanha is a pleasant gift to Konkani people and for his great contribution, it is our duty to respect him,’ said Vally.

Karavali Konkans honored Averyl and Melvyn Rodrigues for transliterating the book on the occasion.
During ‘Khadap Sahitik Bhandar’ programme a 20-minute presentation of ‘Sardaranchi Sinol’ Konkani play was staged by prominent artistes. The play was directed by Dolla Manglur.

Karavali Konkans president Leslie Rego compered the programme.  Karavali Konkans secretary Claude D’Souza and co-ordinator Ransom Saldanha proposed vote of thanks.
