Mumbai: Mortal remains of Cardinal Simon Pimenta Laid to Rest at St John the Evangelist Church, Maro

Mumbai, 24 Jul 2013: The funeral of Cardinal Simon Pimenta of Mumbai Catholic diocese was held here on Tuesday July 23 evening.

 

The mortal remains of ninety-three-year-old Cardinal Simon Pimenta who passed away here on Friday July 19 was placed for public homage at Holy Name Cathedral, Colaba, here on Tuesday July 23 at 10.00am.

 

 

Archbishop Cardinal Dr Oswald Gracious celebrated the funeral Mass at the Cathedral at 12.00pm and conducted the funeral rites at the occasion.

 

The mortal remains were again placed at Cardinal Simon’s ancestral house at Marol, Andheri (East), where he was born and brought up, on Tuesday afternoon.

 

 

 

The mortal remains were taken in a grand procession from the residence to the local St John the Evangelist Church, where Archbishop Cardinal Dr Oswald celebrated the funeral Mass and also conducted the last rites.  The mortal remains of Cardinal Pimenta was buried ceremoniously the cemetery.

 

Mumbai former bishops Dr Perceval E fernandes, Dr Bosco Penha, Dr Agnello Gracious offered prayers for the repose of departed soul.

 

Hundreds of religious priests from across India abroad, nuns, and people of different faith attended the last journey of Cardinal Pimenta on the occasion.

 

All the Catholic education institutions announced holiday in due respect to Cardinal Pimenta.

 

The state health minister Suresh H Shetty, MP Priya Dutt, Mira Road – St Joseph’s parish priest Fr Dominic vas, Sacred Heart parish priest Fr Baptist Pais, Ryan International Group of education institutions managing director Grace Pinto, Model Co-operative Bank chairman Albert W D’Souza, Christian Chamber of Commerce and Industry founder president Vincent Mathias, chairman Henry Lobo, Fudar Foundation chairman John D’Silva, social activists Francis Rasquinha, Gilbert Baptist, Maxim Mathias, Antony Sequeira, Claudy Monteiro Mondankap, Marol former corporator Clive Dias, Mumbai Pradesh Mahila Congress new president Janet L D’Souza, Catholic Sabha Mumbai vice president Lawrence D’Souza, Federation of Maharashtra’s Canara Catholic Association president Harry R Sequeira Ferrar, Maharashtra Konkan Association president Walter D’Souza, convener Leo Fernandes, Konkani Catholic Association – Nallasopara chairman Harry B Coutinho, St Joseph’s Konkani Welfare Association – Mira Road chairman John Crasta, honorary secretary Arun Noronha and others condoled the demise of Cardinal Pimenta.
