Karkala, 09 July 2012: “When some politicians in the state struggle to retain power and others fight to gain power, the Rotarians are enthusiastic to transfer power! There is no need of any kind of competition in service. Whatever benefits the society and the people is charity; it is called social service. Rotary International have preserved and nurtured these ideals. When you develop spirit of service, you also develop your personality. Whatever you achieve in words and deeds should be useful to others is the goal of Rotary International. Service organisations enhance the self respect of human beings. Service organisations are the best platforms to communicate with the general public,” said Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, religious head of Srikshetra Dharmasthala.

He was addressing the members of Karkala Rotary Club inside Bahu Bali Lecture Hall, Karkala on Saturday 7 July, on the occasion of the installation of newly elected 50th president Rtn. A. Mohan Padival and his team. He also said that today ignorance, poverty, unemployment have come down. Improvement in education and wealth has opened up employment opportunities. Service organisations should channel their “give away programmes” to “opening up opportunities programmes”. He further said that they should first practice what they preach to others. There is no different between service and worship. Confining religion to your house and spreading good deeds in the society is called service.

Outgoing president, Rtn. Abhayakumar presided and welcomed the gathering. He thanked all those who helped him to run the organisation during his tenure. Secretary, Rtn. T. C. Shanthappa presented the activities report. President-elect Rtn. Mohan Padival introduced the office bearers for the year 2012-2013. Newly elected secretary, Rtn. Shekar; treasurer, Rtn. Suresh Nayak and sergeant-in-arms, Rtn. S. V. Upadhyaya took the oath of office along with the president elect.

Outgoing president, Rtn. Abhayakumar and secretary, Rtn. Shanthappa, were honoured by Dr D. Veerendra Heggade. Shri Bola Raghava Shetty, proprietor of Karkala Hotel Prakash, donated Rs. 50 thousand to the social service fund of the club. District Vice-Governor, Rtn. P. Manohar Rao, admitted the new members. Regional Sergeant-in-arms, Rtn. Vincent Saldanha, released the club magazine. Student achievers were felicitated; artificial limbs were donated to a physically challenged person. Senior members, Rtn. Rajagopalachar, Rtn. A. K. Achar, Rtn. Balakrishna Shetty, Rtn. Bharath Raj, and Rtn. M. N. Dhanakirthy were introduced to the audience.
