Udupi, 18 June 2012: With the beginning of the rainy season the fishing in sea is banned for 57 days and as a result the prices of vegetables have shot up in the market! When the fishing is banned the quantity of fish available will be less, so the rising of fish price in the market is natural. But, the increase in vegetable prices? that too is natural.
Because there is not enough fish available, there will be demand, so naturally the fish vendors will increase the price. Those who can, will purchase and those who cannot will inevitably buy vegetables, so the number of vegetable buyers will increase. Taking advantage of this situation the vegetable vendors will increase the price.
In Udupi market if the prices of commonly used vegetables are compared to last month, they have been raised quite high. Carrot price was Rs. 23 per kg, has risen to Rs 42. Bitroot has risen from Rs. 11 to Rs. 26. Beans have risen from Rs. 26 to Rs. 36. Brinjol has risen from Rs. 10 to Rs. 16 and Rs. 18, long beans have risen from Rs. 21 to Rs. 26. Other common vegetables such as Pumpkin, Potato etc. have increased by rupees 4 – 5 per kg.
If the rate is increased so much in the first week of the fish ban, then if it increases much more in the next two days it may not be a surprise. The vegetarian restaurants can charge this additional amount to their customers. But the common man and the Schools who conduct after noon hot meal will have to face difficulties.
