Manipal, 16 June 2012: Manipal was named after the lake flowing in Manipal called: Manna Palla in which two engineer students have drowned on Friday night and one managed swim to safety.

The victims are; one from Bangalore Kiran Swami Chandra Moulli (24) and the other from Hyderabad Nikila Malla Madugulla (24).  Both victims were students of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) studying in 2nd Year Engineering (Computer Science).  Both of them along with 4th year student of same group Shounik Mahavedi (26) on Friday midnight drowned while riding in a boat at Manipal (palla) lake due to boat capsizing.  However, since Shounik knew swimming, he could escape, but other two could not make it as they could not swim.

Shounik tried frantically to search the drowned victims for a long time unsuccessfully and finally gave up and reported to Manipal police station at about 3.00am.  The fire brigade arrived early morning and search operations are still going on but so far there is no success in finding the dead bodies.  Bag and purse of Nikila were found in the water.

Since the water was dried in the Mani Palla lake, the two boats were tied at the side of the lake and one of pedal boat was having a hole which these students took out and started riding for a fun and gone to the center of the lake.  Suddenly the boat got capsized and the tragedy took place.

The police suspect that these students were drunk and that why they had no control and feared dead.  However, the escaped one Shounik denying that they were drunk but once the dead bodies are found, the tests will be conducted to find out if they were drunk or not.

This is an example of stupidity that I can t even begin to get over! Insensitive, erroneous reporting of an event that is both tragic and heartbreaking. Even something as simple as their age wasn t researched well enough to be accurate. Have some respect for the departed, if not for their families, who could very well come across this article! As for all you commenters... How dare you pass judgement on others and pretend that you lived saintly lives while in college! These weren t children, they were young adults, exploring their boundaries, discovering the excitement for life, which is their right to do. The boy who died did so trying to save the girl s life, and you sit on your holier-than-thou thrones and try to say it s his parents fault he s dead?!? Again, how dare you! Find out what really happened before you cast stones at others.

It is indeed a very sad and shocking to learn that two young lives are lost. I keep on advising young children to take care esp. in the river and sea while swimming. Every parents must guide and advise their children on this issue which will definitely save their children lives. It is very difficult to imagine the agony and pain their parents must go through now. May God Help them.

These tragedies are happening because the young generation is not aware of the safety requirements that have to be observed at different situations like climbing a tree, swimming, using cumbustible gases, working in the kitchen etc. Everything is taken for granted thinking "so far nothing has happened, now also nothing will happen". Other reason is that students are coming from different parts of India as well as from abroad and none of them are aware of the dangers awaiting them in this part of India which has terrains, bad roads, dangerous beaches, lakes, rivers, poisonous snakes, open wells - to mention a few. I think it is time all the institutions who take these students for studies should orient them and make them aware of the dangers lurking around them. I feel very sad for all the lives lost in the twin districts of Karnataka during these days.
