Moodubelle, 14 Jun 2012: A long standing dream of Belleans to have a degree college in Moodubelle for which a number of people toiled since last year, eventually fructified on June 14, 2012 as St. Lawrence Degree College took the first step in the journey of higher education with the commencement of the Academic Year 2012-13. Joswey Fernandes, the guiding force behind the establishment of the college; Commodore Jerome Castelino, who had toiled practically day and night in putting the college in right direction in all respects;  and also welcomed the well qualified, experienced and dedicated lecturers.

Welcoming the students, Dr. Eugene D’Souza said that  in spite of establishing a degree  college and appointing experienced staff, the college would not be able to function unless there are students. He further said that all students who have taken admission to the First Year of B.A. and B.Com. courses with great expectation will not be disappointed as the College Management, Principal and teaching staff will  take special care to see to it that they will excel not only in their studies but also in all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and help them in developing  their personality.

In his address Commodore Jerome Castelino congratulated the students for their success in their PUC examination and appreciated the fact that they had taken admission in St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle. He said that all students irrespective of their performance in the examination or economic background will be treated equally. He said that the college will endeavour to help the brighter students to achieve greater academic height and those who are academically weak  to catch up with the brighter students.

In the course of his address, Commodore Jerome Castelino made an appeal to the students to be disciplined, sincere and hardworking  and assured them that the lecturers and the college administration will work hard to fulfill their and their parents aspiration for their better education and all round development.

Commodore Jerome Castelino   introduced the Principal and each member of the teaching staff to the students. Thereafter, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes handed over the appointment letters from the CBE to the Principal and members of the teaching and non-teaching staff.

In his presidential message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes narrated the historical importance of Belle and said that Shri Madhvacharya, the great exponent of the Dvaita philosophy and founder of the Shri Krishna temple at Udupi and Ashta Mutts and the world renowned painter Padmabhushan K.K. Hebbar were born in Belle. He also traced the history of a century of both the Church dedicated to St. Lawrence and the educational institutions run by the parish. He pointed out that the Church Aided Higher Primary School will be completing a century next year. He further said that having had the educational institutions till PUC, it was a dream of the parish to have a degree college which came to be fulfilled with the commencement of the academic year 2012-13.

Mrs. Sarita D’Souza, Vice Principal  compeered the programme and also proposed the vote of thanks and assured the Management that she and other staff members will strive hard to meet the aspirations of the students, their parents and the Management.

Following the end of the inauguration of the Academic Year 2012-13, sweets were distributed to the college students. Sweets were also distributed to the students of  the Church Aided Higher Primary school to mark the beginning of the academic year of the degree college.

Congratulations, wishing St. Lawrence Degree College every success. Thanks to those who made it happen. I was talking to my MAI few days ago, she was very very happy and proud to see that the building she saw through her bedroom window throughout her life just across the road from our house has stood the test of time and has become home for higher education before could pass away from this world. It is a special feeling for me and my family. May God bless the institute and Boliye.

What a blessed day, 14 June 2012, for the St. Lawrence Degree College to be born and see the light of the day! Don t be discouraged, folks, at the number, 60%. With God s grace and the intercession of St.Lawrence it ll grow. The Higher Secondary school was born in 1913 with a small number of students, and it grew into High School in 1959, into Pre-University College in 1981! Who on earth knew the tiny baby of Higher Secondary School born in 1913 had the potential to grow to be a Degree College today! The Degree College Born today, let us hope and pray, will grow into something we may not be able foresee today. With Lord s tools such as Fr. Josway, Dr. Eugene D Souza and their staff today, the torch will be passed on to able hands and this institution will see further glorious days in days to come!

First of all let me congratulate the three gurus of the St. Lawrence College without their initiative and constant follow up and determination this day would not have arrived. For everything there is beginning and this will be a great day not only for students but also for Belle Parishioners. The pictures looks all smiles everything ALL IS WELL but reality will be realized in the coming years. Well, there is a lot of hard work to do and I am sure with the able leadership of Dr. Eugene, Commodore Jerome and Rev. fr. Joswey they will not only succeed but also have the best results. First batch is always remembered and students of the first batch will be always remembered. There were some questions raised earlier whether the college is required? In my opinion we should always encourage if there is a genuine need for school or college. We should not worry about ifs and why?. I am sure the above gentlemen and committee have taken consensus before venturing into setting up the college. WISHING THE NEW STUDENTS ALL THE BEST AND THE MANAGEMENT AND STAFF ALL SUCCESS. I am sure many more students shall enroll in the comming years on completion of first batch best results for sure.

Congratulations to the management and the students of St. Lawrence Degree College and good luck for the first year. I am sure the qualified lecturers will take extra steps to bring out the best from this first batch of students as less number of students mean individual attention to every one. We belleans are lucky to get this opportunity, so children should take full advantage of this opportunity. best of luck again to all involved.
