Udupi, 02 June 2012: Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti organised naming and cradle ceremony to as many as six tadpoles at Hotel Keediyur to invite rains. The rituals of cradle ceremony were performed by women who gathered on the occasion. Tadpoles were named after rain as “Maleraya”.
Speaking to media persons, Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti President Nityananda Olakadu said according to the ancient belief, worshiping frogs in various forms will help for early showers that are delayed. Ironically, these rituals are presumed absurd these days, though they have their own unique sanctity.
Udupi is in a drought situation without proper rains and people are facing acute shortage of water. When rains were delayed during earlier years, I arranged for frog marriage in the year 2008 and baby shower ceremony for frogs in the year 2009, following which the district had received early monsoon.
With the same expectation, I have organised the naming and cradle ceremony for baby frogs and I hope rains will occur in couple of days, he said and added that frogs rarely exist in these areas and he had to search for the Tadpoles and he got these six tadpoles from Kolalagiri.
All six tadpoles were kept in a glass container and women took the glass container round the cradle thrice before placing it in the cradle. The cradle was decorated with many balloons and flowers. Sweets were distributed to the people and crackers were burst following the ceremony.
