Udupi: Dangerous Chandika curve in Balebare Ghat

Udupi, 31 May 2012: The link between Udupi and Shivamoga is Balebare Ghat or Hulikal Ghat which is concreted now. But the vehicles moving at Chandika curve in this road will have to be saved only by Chandikamba Devi of the nearby temple. This route in Ghat section which gets worse every monsoon, the movement of vehicles is an adventure, hence the twin districts have concreted these roads and have constructed protection wall. But these seems missing wherever they are required.

 

In the last five months the traffic was stopped in Balebare Ghat for concreting the road and the constriction work is not yet completed. Though the concreting work in Shivamoga area is completed, the protection wall work is still going on. But unfortunately the main curve Chandikavana which is a bad dream of the drivers, is not included. It seems that there is not enough funds left in the Udupi – Shivamoga district grant for the construction of protection wall!

 

 

 

 

 

The twin districts have spent rupees 10 crores for the concreting of the 3.5 kilometer road and the protection wall. But not including the important 50 – 60 meter steep curve in this phase of construction work is an invitation to the danger.

 

In Balebare Ghat which is about 7 kilometer length, 4 kilometer belongs to Udupi and 3 kilometer belongs to Shivamoga district. Though the 4 kilometer road was supposed to be concreted and the protection wall was to be built, so far 3.50 kilometer road only had been concreted. In this project among the twin districts Udupi and Shivamoga, each 2 kilometer length was to be concreted. In Udupi district area the 2 kilometer length has been concreted and the protection wall has been built. But the Shivamoga Lokopayogi department has constructed only 1.5 kilometer length of concreting and for the remaining 0.5 kilometer concreting they seems to have shortage of funds.

 

The joint project of the twin district is being carried out by a PWD Contractor. Though the concreting work was supposed to be completed by end of April, the work is still going on. The DC of both the districts have banned the traffic on this road from 04th January 2012. Until 25th May the traffic was not running on this road. From 25th May the traffic was allowed, but the owners of the buses and other heavy vehicles are unhappy to see that the Chandikavana curve is left as it is without completing it.

 

Udupi Lokopoyogi department has spent rupees 4.95 crores for the 2 kilometer concreting and protection wall. As per the information given by the Shivamoga district Lokopayogi department rupees 5 crores were allotted. Rupees 0.95 crores have been already released, but only 1.5 kilometer length has been concreted. But the 80 meter long dangerous Chandikavana curve has been left and the answer is that there is no funds available for the construction of this curve.

 

In this road everyday about 40 private buses make 80 trips. About 10 – 15 KSRTC buses run on this road and besides these many private heavy and light vehicles run on this road every day. The Balebare Ghat road is just 7 meter wide with steep curve and without any protection wall. The stones at the edge of road have collapsed and while the vehicle brake fails during descending, then it may fall into the 200 meter deep. Keeping such a dangerous curve without constructing the protection wall is surprising. At least now if the remaining rupees 5 lakhs are utilized for the construction of the protection wall to this curve then the possible accidents can be avoided.

Hi all, udupi ghat is very very beautiful, actually khandala is famous but udupi ghat is very high but unfortunately khandala is famous. i like udupi ghat. more n more i like to see this ghat..
