Udupi, 12 May 2012: In Karkala Taluk of Udupi district alone average 2 crore rupees worth of crop is getting ruined by the wild animals! Approximately in the 3 taluks of the Udupi district the farmers are losing about 6 crores rupees worth crops per year from the wild animals! The only way available for the farmers to escape from this problem is not to cultivate any crop!

This might seem funny, but the farmers are helpless against these wild animals. They have made appeals to the people’s representatives, officers and government several times and also have conducted protest. But nothing has materials. So these farmers now say that the only option is to give up cultivation.

Wild pig, peacock, monkeys are the main enemies of these farmers. In the recent time even the wild bedfellows too are into the party. Mainly in the coastal area farmers are subjected to crop damage by the peacock and wild pig for paddy crop and monkeys for coconut and vegetables. The major portion of the damage is for the coconut farmers which are caused by monkeys and also the wild rats.

Bharatiya Kissan Sangha Karkala committee gathered information on this in 2010 regarding the damage caused to the farmers of 22 Grama in Karkala Taluk. As per this information in one year the 1,256 farmers of these Grama had a damage of crop worth Rs. 2,08,98,350. Which means in average each farmer is losing Rs. 16,638 per year from the wild animals (mainly monkeys).

In Karkala Taluk itself 9,400 monkeys have been counted. In the whole district the numbers cross more than 30 thousands. From these the farmers are losing rupees 5 – 6 crores per year! We have explained this to the government and requested for a solution in various ways. But the government does not understand this. Now we will have to protest severely or else we have to give up farming, says senior farmer Bharatiya Kissan Sangha District President B.V. Poojary.

Even in this situation the Bharatiya Kissan Sangha is getting ready for the final attempt. Conducting huge protest on 16th May in front of the Deputy commissioner’s Office along with 3 – 4 thousands farmers, thus showing the strength of the farmers and asking for the solution of these wild animals or else warning them to face the consequences. For us farmers there is no other way than farming, sucide is the only other option, so now it is do or die situation, says B.V. Poojary.

There are attempts to catch the monkeys and leaving them into the jungle. But the funny thing is that the monkeys caught in one village if left to the jungle of another village, then they cause problems in that village. Then it becomes a problem catching these monkeys.

In Himachal Pradesh the government has found a solution for the monkeys problem. There the monkeys are caught and then scientifically they are treated so that they cannot reproduce. This brings the population of monkeys down. This has been successful there. If the government decides to do this, then it is not difficult to solve this problem, only will is required, says Bharatiya Kissan Sangha Secretary Sathyanarayana Udupa Japti.

BV Poojary, Sir, I know you head BKS and it has political affiliations. Which party, I do not know, but sure that party was in power sometime or the other since 1960, when the state was formed. The Karnataka Police Act is in vogue since 1963. How many amendments are passed in 50 yrs? Make possession of firearms easier for farmers, who require to chase monkeys and other wild animals. Small firearms are required in most homes these days to prevent robbery, beak-ins, and more serious crimes. A majority of the farmer families I visited and spent time in twin districts owned guns and used to scare the wild animals. May be the GP should run a campaign to get licensed firearms for all who want and afford them.
