International Speech Contest held by Toastmasters Area 2 in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, 03 April 2012: That Friday was different from any others. It seemed to have a purpose as it dawned on March 30. 2012.  The sun was up and bright as early as 6.00 am in the morning. The warmth and the heat of the sun matched the scenario at the auditorium in the GASCO Tower, Sheikh Khalifa Energy Complex, Abu Dhabi. By 9.00 AM the place was swarming with brisk and smart Toastmasters from five prominent clubs of Area 2. It was their day! Their very own area conference!

 

The arrangements at the auditorium were checked over and the role players briefed, for the hundredth time by the perfectionists; the Area Governor MTM Asma Al Amri and the Conference Chairman TM Mane Bhojaraj, President of Abu Dhabi Chapter Club. They had spent many weeks planning for this grand and successful conference!

 

 

The meeting started promptly at 9.40 am by Chief Sergeant-at- Arm TM Aby Hans calling meeting to order. Conference Chairman TM Bhojaraj Mane welcomed toastmasters / guests and declared meeting open along with Area Governor. Thereafter, Area Governor, MTM Asma Al Amri, the architect of the entire event addressed the audience. It was followed by the colourful Banner March of the five member clubs of Area 2. The march was lead by the Toastmasters Club of Abu Dhabi Chapter, followed by the Abu Dhabi Refinery Club, the Achievers Toastmasters club, Al Riyadah Toastmasters and by the Al Ro’Yah Toastmaster club. The morning MCs Ravi Rai and Leena Jayakumar were at their best.

 

The day soon moved on to the much awaited contests. It was a real test for the Toastmasters, for the winners would move on to the division level next. The general spirit in the air was of a high expectation; it was a real feast that was going to be laid out to each and every aspiring Toastmaster, for soon he would be listening to the best of the best speakers!

 

The Humorous speech contest, lead the show which was chaired by an  energetic Toastmaster, the immediate past Area 2 Governor, TM Marwan Al Shayea who befitted the role aptly with his timely jokes!

 

The participants of the Humorous contest were: TM Sonny Obdin, TM Venkat Mutya, TM Loyola Pinto and TM Manoj. Each of the speakers was one better than the other and the audience almost fell out of their chairs laughing at their hilarious speeches!

 

After a short coffee break, the key note speaker TM Loy Machedo gave a wonderful presentation on who is a good ‘Corporate Communicator’ and about ‘40.5 secrets of a successful speaker’. It was soon followed by the Table Topic contest chaired by one of the seasoned Toastmaster, TM Abraham Thomas. The participants of the Contest were: TM Krishnan S, MTM Jamey Iris, TM Santhana Anandaraman and by TM Abdulaziz Nawab.It was indeed amazing to watch each one of those speakers talk spontaneously from different angles on the same given topic!

 

After a sumptuous lunch MCs Alfred Geronimo and Christy Tibus took over and had the audience laughing throughout with their observational humour. Alfred Gernoimo  also won the hearts of the audience with his melodious voice. TM Vincent Palanas had the audience tapping their toes while he sang a medley of songs accompanied by his guitar. The Dancing Champions Jay Ray and Mhaye from the Abu Dhabi Filipino Dance Club mesmerised the audience with a swing performance.Next was the Evaluation Speech contest which was chaired by the young and dynamic TM Mark Dennis. The participants in this contest were: TM Manoj, TM Sanjay Vissa, TM Racquel Eder and by TM Obadah S. Al Sawadi.

 

The last contest of the day was the much awaited International Speech contest. It was chaired by yet another seasoned Toastmaster, MTM Sujatha Parthasarathy. The participants in this contest were: TM Loyola Pinto, MTM Milanie Sanchez, TM Abdulaziz Nawab and TM Obadah S. Al Sawadi.

 

By the time the contests were over it was evening. The day had passed by quickly and no one had even noticed it. Everyone at the auditorium was glued to the speakers and to the day’s events. They were eagerly waiting to hear the results. The contests were evaluated by a panel of very seasoned and experienced judges headed by TM Prakash Chand Mehta.

 

Everything good has to come to an end they say. So did the area conference on March 30th. The closing ceremony began with the address of the Division H Governor, Dr. Nasef Dhafari. He praised the area governor for her special efforts and remarked that Area 2 which now holds the 3rd position at the district would soon reach the top position due the endless and untiring efforts of all the member clubs who constantly clamber for improvement.


It was soon followed by the much awaited prize distribution. There were two prizes the first and the second for each contest. The winners of the contests are as follows:


HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST:-
1st Place - TM Loyola Pinto (Abu Dhabi Chapter)
Runner up- TM Venkat Mutya (Ro’Yah Toastmasters Club)

 

TABLE TOPICS SPEECH CONTEST:-
1st Place - MTM Jamie Iris  (Achievers Toastmasters Club)
Runner up- TM Santhana Anandraman (Ro’Yah Toastmasters Club)
EVALUATION SPEECH CONTEST:-
1st Place - TM Sanjay Vissa (Abu Dhabi Chapter)
Runner up- TM Obadah Al Sawadi (Ro’Yah Toastmasters Club)

 

INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST:-
1st Place - MTM Milanie Sanchez (Achievers Toastmasters Club)
Runner up- TM Loyola  Pinto (Abu Dhabi Chapter)

 

The trophies and certificates were distributed to the winners by Area Governor Asma Al Amri and Division Governor Dr. Nasef Dhafari. The area governor then announced the best club of the district which was the  Ro’Yah Toastmasters club and  the best Toastmaster of the Area who was again another Toastmaster from the Ro’Yah club, TM Marwan Al Shayea. She then gave away certificates and gifts to all the role players in appreciation of their efforts. The result of the much awaited raffle draw was then announced.

 

The entire event was sponsored by GASCO. The conference was declared closed by the area governor at 5.00 pm.
