Shirva, 12 March 2012: Since the last 18 years, there is no even repair work done to the roads of Sorpu, Kallottu and Kadambu villages, so the villagers called to boycott this election! These villages are of Shirva Grama which is popular for the activities of religious, social, education and harmony. Their demand is just one, “give us a road suitable for travelling”.

The road passes near Shirva Hindu P.U. College and M.S.R.S. College, through Sorpu, Kallottu this road will link to Adapadi, Palli of Karkala Taluk. After laying asphalt (tar) 18 years ago, there has been no repair done to this road, which causes difficulties to the travelling of people. The road is full of potholes and dust. The school and college students who walk through will have rangoli design on their uniforms every day.

The free cycles issued to the students of high schools cannot be ridden on this road…? Aged elderly people and the sick are having even more difficulty. Ever since the crude oil project began one year ago in Padoor Grama near Shirva, the water is transported by tankers throughout the 24 hours from Papanashini river to the project site work and with the continuous movement of the tankers the condition of the road has become even worse.

The company which promised to repair the road in the beginning is just keeping quiet now, is one reason for the anger of the villagers. Even the Grama Panchayath is also neglecting this area. But when the election comes all the political parties shed crocodile tears on the difficulties of the people. And then those people’s representatives and their supporters will come to this area only during the next election, is what the elders say…!

In order to draw the attention of the government and the people’s representatives, this time none of us will go for the voting, we will boycott the election. We do not ask anything else… we only ask for a road suitable for travelling… give us road is the grief… should not become a cry in the wilderness….?

The villagers of Sorpu, Kallotu and Kadamby of Shirva Grama have every right to boycott the coming the coming election as they are still waiting for a decent road. It is a shame that since 18 years nobody has done anything for these roads. The pictures itself proof the condition of these roads. Probably no ministers or some municipal officials live nearby or use these roads. It it was the case the road would have been repaired a long time.
