The celebrations began last year on February 6. Special prayers would be organised, following which a cultural programme would be held in Roasario Cathedral Grounds on Saturday at 4 p.m. It would be presided over by Rev. Krishna Palemar and Members of the Rajya Sabha Oscar Fernandes and Mabel Rebello would attend the programme on Saturday.

Rev. D’Souza said that on Sunday, special prayers would be offered to thank god for the achievements of the diocese and the completion of 125 years of the diocese in Nehru Maidan at 4 p.m. The programme would be attended by Chief Minister D.V. Sadanada Gowda and Union Minister for Corporate Affairs M. Veerappa Moily. Archbishop of Bombay Rev. Oswald Cardinal Gracias would preside over the programme.

To mark the anniversary, the diocese had taken up the construction of 161 houses in each of the parishes that came under the jurisdiction of the diocese, spread across three revenue districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod. 97 were under construction and five had been completed. Among the ones that had been completed, the diocese had contributed funds for two, while the remaining had been financed by individual parishes, the Bishop said.

The diocese had undertaken the construction of two hostels for boys aspiring for education in Mangalore. He said that the church would also sponsor education of boys and girls up to the pre university level, with preference given to Christians.

Bishop denies controversy in housing scheme

Mangalore Bishop Aloysius Paul D’souza on Monday denied that there was any controversy over a housing project, undertaken to mark the 125th anniversary of the Mangalore Diocese.

He was replying to a question while addressing the media to announce the conclusion of the year-long celebration of the diocese’s 125th anniversary.

Asked about the recent protest in front of the Bishop’s house on January 31, the Bishop said there was no controversy.

The Mangalore Diocese had undertaken the construction of houses for the poor last year as a part of its 125{+t}{+h}year celebration.

Asked about the residents of Maroli who were residing on the premises formerly owned by St. Antony’s Institutes of Charity, the Bishop said that some of them lived in bungalows elsewhere.

The political opportunism of diocesan church hierarchy comes out loud and clear in the guest list, more than the love for the poor, for whom houses are being built. No controversy there!
