Moodubelle: Annual Day Celebration in St. Lawrence Composite PU College

Moodubelle, 21 December 2011: The Annual Day of St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle was celebrated on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 in two phases-forenoon and afternoon. The forenoon programme comprised of  the High School-PU College Assembly, hoisting of the PU College  flag and prize distribution. The forenoon programme was presided over by Fr. Joswey Fernandes. Prof. UL Bhat, Principal of Jnanganga PU College, Nellikatte was the chief guest.

 

The chief guest, Principal  UL Bhat hoisted the  PU College flag at 9.30 am as the students rendered the flag song composed by Mrs. Chandrakala. Thereafter students and guests proceeded to the auditorium Fr the prize distribution programme.

 

Prizes were distributed to the High School and PU College students for their academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities by the chief guest, Principal U L Bhat and Alphonse K. Alva, Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council.

 

In his message, Principal UL Bhat said that each and every student should dedicate themselves in fulfilling their duties as students such as studies and participation in various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. It is important to adapt oneself to the changing circumstances in order to be successful in life. Development of soft-skills along with education is very important  to move forward and achieve greater height in career and life.

 

 

In his presidential address, Fr. Joswey Fernandes highlighted the role of the teachers in shaping the character and personality of the students and appealed the students to have respect for their teachers and be grateful to their service.

 

Fr. Paul Sequeira, Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College welcomed the guests; the chief guest was introduced by Mrs. Chandrakala; Mrs. Hilda Aranha proposed the vote of thanks and Harold D’Souza compeered the programme.

 

The second part of the Annual Day programme commenced at 2 pm. The programme was presided over by the Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions, Fr. Joswey Fernandes.  The guests of honour for this programme included Vasant Shetty, Regional Education Officer of the Udupi Zone, Prof. Mathew C. Nainan-Principal of Little Rock Indian School and Commodore Jerome Castelino. Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Fr. Lancy Saldanha-Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Devdas Hebbar-President of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat and President of the Old Students Association, Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Hilda Aranha-Senior most Teacher of the High School, Mrs. Shilpa Nayak-President of Parents-Teachers Association and student representative-Ivan Lobo (CPL) and Priya Shetty (SPL) were on the dais.

 

Following the prayer song, Mrs. Hilda Aranha welcomed all the guests and Fr. Paul Sequeira offered them flowers. Thereafter, Fr. Paul Sequeira read out the report of the institution for the year 2011-12 highlighting the achievement of the students in curricular and extra-curricular activities.

 

Vasant Shetty in his address, by narrating two significant and interesting stories emphasised the value of love and faith and also stressed on the principles of discipline and hard work to achieve success in life.

 

After distributing endowment and sports championship prizes to the PU Students, Prof Mathew C. Nainan in an effective way pointed out the need to listen to speakers so that the audience could understand what is being spoken by the speaker and this would be possible if the audience maintained silence.  He further said that it is not enough to be smart to achieve success in life. A person also has to be good.  Prof. Mathew gave to the students the ‘ABC Mantra’ in order to achieve success in their lives. A for Appearance which should be pleasant and cheerful; B for Behaviour which should include respect for parents, teachers and others; and C for Communication, Character and Compassion. Adding to this, he said that discipline and right attitude would enable the students t scale new heights and become responsible citizens of the country.

 

Commodore Jerome Castelino distributed endowment prizes and Mrs. Shilpa Nayak distributed sports championship prizes for the High School students. This was followed by felicitation of Commodore Jerome Castelino for his service to the institution.

 

Speaking at this occasion, Commodore Jerome Castelino narrated the significance of the War Memorial which he had built in front of his house that was inaugurated on December 16, 2011 to mark the 50th and 40th anniversaries of the Goa and Bangladesh Liberation Wars. He also said that as all the names of the soldiers who had lost their lives in these wars could not be written on this War memorial, he has procured from Delhi the “Amar Jawan” book containing the names of over 21,000 soldiers who had laid down their lives in all wars since 1947 till 2001. Commodore Castelino also stressed the importance of hoisting the national flag by every Indian in order to manifest their patriotism and love of the nation which he lamented that has been missing among many of the countrymen.

 

In his presidential message, Fr. Joswey Fernandes quoting Mother Teresa, “In this world we may not be able to do great things, but we can do small things in great love,” said that in a small way but with great love, St. Lawrence Educational Institutions have been serving the society. He traced the landmarks of the institutions in the near past and near future such as the Silver Jubilee of St. Lawrence PU College (2006), Golden Jubilee of St. Lawrence High School (2009) and Centenary of the Church Aided Higher Primary School (2012-13). Fr. Joswey also revealed that process has already started for establishing a Degree College from the academic year 2012-13 and appealed the students, parents and well-wishers to support these ventures.

 

 

The stage programme was compeered by the PU College teachers-Navin Correa and Mrs. Jacinta Lobo and vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Sarojini.

 

Students of both PU College and High School presented variety entertainment programme comprising of  group songs, folk and classical dances and skits.  Two skits by the PU students on Communal Harmony and the evil of alcoholism and addiction and another skit by the High school students on the Rights of Children were well enacted and were quite educative.

 

The variety entertainment programme was anchored by  Flavia Mathais  of 10th standard in Kannada and John Paul of Second Year PU Commerce in English.
