Ahmedabad, 16 November 2011: Kaushik Lodha (9) was wheeled into LG Hospital’s operation theatre on Tuesday morning with a fractured right arm.

When he woke up groggy from general anesthesia a couple of hours later, it felt as if both his arms were fractured and started crying in pain. The doctors had operated and put plates and screws in his left arm which was not fractured while the broken right arm had not even been touched!

Kaushik’s father Manoj Lodha, who runs a tyre repair shop in Isanpur , said, "This is unacceptable and strict action should be taken against the doctors. Fortunately, it was just a fracture. They were not dealing with any of the vital organs of my son." A police complaint has been filed against the doctors for negligence.

Kaushik had hurt his arm during Diwali vacation at his maternal uncle’s home and was taken to a local bonesetter who bandaged his arm. He later came to Ahmedabad and his parents took him to another bonesetter.

But when nothing worked, he was brought to LG Hospital.

"The surgery was planned on Tuesday morning. His mother realized something was wrong when the boy started screaming in pain in both hands," said Manoj.

Municipal commissioner G Mahapatra has suspended the three resident doctors who operated on Kaushik - Jain Chawda, Kaushal Shah and Umesh Chaudhary.

Professor Bhavesh Jesalpura, in-charge head of the orthopedic department , has been served a showcase notice and a committee headed by the Civil Hospital medical superintendent will probe the incident.

"The child was operated upon again in the evening for 10 minutes with the plates being removed and put in the right hand," said LG medical superintendent R G Surela.

You cannot expect better service than this from people who become "medical professionals" out of compulsion (from their families)rather than love for the hallowed profession. May be these surgeons who operated on this boy are quacks with fake certificates/degrees.
