Udupi, 28 September 2011: Behind the death of Prathvi the national level javelin thrower sports woman who committed suicide by hanging herself in S.M.S. College Hostel Brahmavara on Wednesday, the shadow of an youth seems visible. The accused youth Misban Husain (20) is now in Brahmavara Police Station lock-up. A year ago Misban used to come to play cricket to the same sports ground where Prathvi was practicing and he had friendly introduced himself to her.

Prathvi also was good with him. He had gifted her dress, gold chain and also he used to give her cash now and then since she was poor. But before all these, first he gifted her a mobile phone. This same mobile had caused her the suffocation. These mistakes she committed in his friendship had finally ended her life also.

Misban started to call her to that mobile phone and harass her to love him. Unhappy with this, she threw that mobile and purchased her own mobile. Tracing this new mobile number Misbahn again started to call her and harass her. Then when she did not take the call, he called her from another girl Irine D’Souza’s mobile and harassed her.

With all these Prathvi was under severe mental pressure. All this matter is clear from her diary which she used to write. Now that diary is in the custody of the Police. With this diary and as per the complaint given by Prathvi’s uncle Shankara Poojary, the case has been registered, said Brahmavara Circle Inspector Krishnamurthy.

On Tuesday until 12.00 noon Prathvi sang and danced with her friends in the hostel and later phoned to her Father that, she has won 2 medals in the Dasara sports event held in Mandya and expressed her happiness. Within few minutes from this she has killed herself. That means, before that did she receive call from Misban? Being mentally tortured again did she surrendered herself to death? Answer to these question can only be known from the investigation.

But as per Prathvi’s uncle Dinesh Poojary, this is not the only reason for her suicide. Seeing her sports achievements while she was in the High School, the local Sports Club had adopted her and had admitted her to S.M.S. College. They had assured her that they will provide all the facilities to her sports career. But there they used to make her work like a servant and were not providing the necessary financial help to her for going to the sports tournaments. The College Principal, Sports Trainer and the Hostel Warden are the reason for her suicide, said Dinesh Poojary to the media outside the mortuary.

No one from Prathvi’s College, Hostel or the Sports Club who had adopted her, had come to visit to the Private Hospital in Brahmavar where her body was kept or even later on Wednesday while the post-mortem was being conducted at Manipal Hospital. This had severely angered her relatives. This reflects the negligence they have on her, they said with anger.

Her relatives did not allow to conduct the post-mortem in the Brahmavara Hospital, then the post-mortem was conducted in K.M.C. Hospital Manipal on Wednesday. While taking the body to her village Amparu, on the way in Brahmavara the students, Principal and Lecturers of S.M.S. College were waiting to give their last respect. Seeing this Dinesh Poojary and relatives rebuked Principal Salvador Noronha and accused that the College is the reason for the suicide of Prathvi. Finally they did not allow them to give their last respect to Prathvi on behalf of the College. With this her classmates and the students became unhappy.

The Principal has said that she was an very good sports person and they were proud of her. The students of the College have submitted a petition to the Brahmavara Police Station urging to conduct the investigation without any bias.

It is sad that this javelin thrower sports woman Prathvi, who could have reached high goals in her sports career, ended her game of life at half way. This is an example of how a device called mobile phone can make the young generation off-track.

It is indeed a sad story about an upcoming bright athlete has to end her life this way. There may be many reasons for her suicide. Am sure with proper counseling and guidance a precious life would have been saved. Many a time we all come across such disturbing news but still we always treat as one of a kind! What we need to inform the new generation that irrespective of the pressure in excelling in studies or in sports one has to have a mentor to guide these young minds to cope up with the external elements.

Dont tie all things to her Lover once again. It is very easy to our government machanism and Culprit. If it is a MUSLIM then it is more than enough to bury this case. Shame to our thinker. shame to our educattion.
