Ahmadabad, 19 Seeptember 2011:

CM Narendra Modi politely refused to wear the skullcap a maulana offered him at the fast venue. He instead asked the old man to drape his chadar around his shoulders

Muslims are being warmly welcomed at Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s fast amidst reports that they have been categorically asked to come wearing skullcaps and in case of women, burqas. In the last two days, Modi has been sporting different styles of headgears. So a die-hard Modi fan on Sunday, who was glad to be invited on stage, was eagerly looking forward to felicitating his idol – the peace-harmony-and-sadbhavna-preaching chief minister.

A maulana walked up to the stage to meet the CM on Sunday morning. He told Modi he had something to offer him before taking out a skullcap from the side pocket of his robe

When he approached Modi, the CM got up from his seat and warmly shook his hands.

Modi, too, looked appropriately pleased when the maulana – dressed in a black robe and sporting a green chadar – came up to him.

After they exchanged pleasantries, the maulana surprised Modi by taking out a Muslim skullcap from the sidepocket of his robe, confident that the CM will wear it graciously since he has been letting different people tie turbans.

But Modi’s expression changed like a flash. An expert at “disaster management,” Modi took control of the situation. He gestured that he would not prefer wearing the cap.

While the exchange of words between them is not known, Modi is believed to have indicated to the maulana that he would not mind wearing the latter’s green chadar.

The maulana thought CM would wear the skullcap since he has been letting people tie him turbans. But Modi politely refused, telling him he wouldn’t mind wearing the chadar

The maulana obliged and immediately draped his chadar around his shoulders. Modi responded to the kindness with a namaskaar. The maulana left the stage and the venue, apparently in a huff. Before leaving, he again tucked back the skull cap in his side pocket.

Modi, it seems, does not wish to make the mistake that former deputy Prime Minister L K Advani had made on his visit to Pakistan. The senior BJP leader had offered a chadar to Jinnah’s mausoleum and described the founder of Pakistan as “secular” and an “ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity”.

Thanks but no thanks: Modi offers a namaste to maulana

For the time being it seems, a couple of tweets, two open letters and a three-day fast should be enough for those who want to believe Modi is a changed man. After all, who would want to see a potentially promising political future staggering like a dinghy in a maelstrom.
