Moodubelle, 05 September 2011: Teachers Day was celebrated in St. Lawrence Composite PU College with gaiety and solemnity jointly by the Parents-Teachers Association(PTA) and student community on September 5, 2011 from 11 am to 1 pm. There was spontaneous participation of the teachers from both PU College and High School  as well as non-teaching staff in all the activities conducted by the PTA and the students.

At 11 am, the students organised lucky and funny games for the teachers who enthusiastically participated in all four events to the great applause and joy of the students.  There was festive atmosphere in the college ground with slight drizzle at the end of the games.

The stage programme began in the College auditorium which was presided over by Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Parish Priest and Correspondent of St. Lawrence Composite PU College. Principal-Fr. Paul Sequeira,  President of the PTA-Mrs. Shilpa Nayak, College and School Pupil Leaders, all teachers and members of the non-teaching staff were on the dais.

Following the opening prayer very well sung by the PU College students, Mrs. Shilpa Nayak welcomed the gathering. Thereafter, dignitaries on the dais offered floral tribute to the picture of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the Second President of India on whose birth anniversary, the Teachers Day is being celebrated throughout the country.

Kum. Shriraksha Hebbar of 10th standard and  Kum. Poorna Nayak of Second Year PUC Science spoke on the importance of the teachers day. Among the teachers, Mrs. Shyamala through a meaningful poem addressed to the students highlighted the role of  teachers in their lives.

Mrs. Sunita Kamat traced in brief the role of teachers in the lives of the students  from ancient to modern times. She said that during the Gurukul system the teachers and students practically lived under the same roof and had greater interaction and impact on the students. However, in modern times the relationship between the teacher and student has been confined to the four walls of a classroom and that too for a short period. However, she continued saying that modern teachers may not be like Dronacharya or Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, but they do help their students in achieving their goals and dreams. In a touching way she said that once you go out of the institution and achieve greatness in life, teachers do not expect from you that you should prostrate before them, but if you come across your teachers on the way, please do not turn your face away from them.

The PUC students presented two group songs-one in English and another in Kannada wishing teachers a happy Teachers Day.  Students offered flwers and gifts to teachers and non-teaching staff members as a token of their apprecaition of their service. Fr. Joswey Fernandes  gave away prizes to those teachers who stood first and second in the lucky and funny games.

In his presidential address, Fr. Joswey Fernandes pointed out the importance of a teacher in the life of a student  by quoting Alexander the Great who had said, “I owe  my birth to my father, but i owe my life to my teacher...” Fr. Joswey emphasised the great role that teachers play as sculptors in shaping the life and future of  individual students.

Fr. Paul Sequeira appreciated the way the Teachers Day was celebrated jointly by the PTA and the students of the institution. He thanked the teaching and non-teaching staff in carrying out their duties to the best of their abilities and rendering their service selflessly to the institution and the student community.

The programme was compeered by Antony Fernandes, member of the PTA and the vote f thanks was proposed by Ivan Kishore Lobo, the College Pupils Leader.

What a great event of honouring teachers day! Iloved to be a student to share the joy of students the way the day was observed af Belle High School/college.A teacher indeed great who shares the pleasure with the rising students and always remembers that " he was my student". I am from a family of teachers. My wife was a teacher, my sister, my cousins, my Uncles were teachers. Now my daughter is also a Teacher. I love one of my teachers who has been very responsible forshaping my future, that made me what I am to day. I still love her, admire her and daily remember herwith gratitude. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, dedicated his birthday to be observed as Teacher s Day and made it immortal. This is how teachers got true recognition and honour and respect. Today, we see some teachers not doing their work honestly, run after for making money and indulging in tuitions, without properly discharging their duties responsibilities towards students and the profession, which is a dark spot. Yet teacher is great, who is responsible for shaping the future of the students. Therefore true celebrations must aim at the philosophy Dr Radhakrishnana radiated to make the lives of the teachers sublime.
