Udupi, 12 July 2011: Taptha Mudradharane a religious program, which is one among the Madhwa Traditions, were conducted in Udupi Shri Krishna Mutt on Monday. Shiroor Mutt Shri Laxmeevara Theertha who is administering the Shri Krishna Paryaya Pooja conducted the Taptha Mudradharane to thousands of devotees. Taptha Mudradharane is the process of heating the metallic Shankha Chakra in Sudarshana Homa and marking (Mudra) from it on the body. As per the Shastra this Taptha Mudradharane is to be performed at least once in a year without any difference among the castes.

But there is also an scientific significance in marking by the hot metal. In the rainy season many diseases are caused by the germs, this Taptha Mudradharane works as preventive to diseases. But the people are not ready to get their body burnt just for this purpose, so our elders have given the religious background to this. The mudras are in the shape of the weapons of the Gods, Shanka Chakra. In one way this represents that these mudras are the weapons which prevent from diseases.

On Monday Paryaya Shree and also Vidyasagaratheertha of Krishnapura Mutt at their Mutt conducted the Taptha Mudradharane after the Sudarshana Homa. Similarly on Monday Pejavara Senior Shree Vishveshatheertha who is in Chennai conducted Taptha Mudradharane there at Raghavendra Mutt and Palimaru Shree Vidyadeesha Theertha conducted Taptha Mudradharane at Krishnadhama in Mysore.

Pejavar Junior Shree Vishvaprasanna Theertha, Sode Mutt Shree Vishvavalabha Theertha and Puttige Mutt Shree Suganendra Theertha who all are in Bangalore for the Chathurmasa Vratha, conducted Taptha Mudradharane in their branch Mutt in Bangalore.  On the day of Taptha Mudradharane itself Chathurmasa Vratha will also begin. Seers who are always on travel for their religious mission, stay during the rainy season in one place and conduct religious study and orate the same to devotees.

Here below are some details of Mudradharane Why one must have Taptamudradharane? Tapta mudradharane has a prominent place in Madhwa philosophy. Tapta Mudradharane is the Vaishnavathva symbol. During Jatakarma, choula, upanayana and mantropadesha times, Mudradharane has an importance. Mudradharae to be taken every year Shayanaikadashi(Ashada shukla ekadashi), Shravana Dwadashi Upavasa day, Bhadrapada shukla ekadashi, kaarthika shukla ekadashi, upakarma day. In harivamsha - we can find that Srikrishna had ordered that only those who have Mudradarane can enter Dwarake. Taptamudradharana Mahatva can be found in various Granthaas, 1. Chakrastuthi of Vadirajaru, 2. Taptachakrameemamsa by Sri Vijayeendraru, 3. Taptamudradharanasamarthanam by Sri Kundalagiri Acharyaru, 4. Yukthimallika-Phalisaurabha of Srivadirajaru, etc. For Sudarshana chakra - Mahalaxmi s Durgaroopa is abhimani devate. For Shanka - Sri mahalaxmi s Shreeroopa is abhimani devate. Durga roopa - tamoguna abhimani devate Shree roopa - satvaguna abhimani devate. Because of wearing Mudradharane - Power of Tamoguna - ajnaana, mithyaagnaana, will be removed, and through Shanka - Sathvaguna will be replacing tamoguna.

"In the rainy season many diseases are caused by the germs, this Taptha Mudradharane works as preventive to diseases" so it is a belief and it is not possible to give reasons to proove religious belief. Science works on reasoning.

I think it works like a vaccination to stimulate the immune system in the body to develop immunity to the diseases.

Dear Naveen, What do you mean by "the chances of transmission of virus is less"!!! You want to take some chance with these deadly diseses??? My question was "Is it 100% medically safe??? and not (1-99%)!!!
Naveen M., Udupi Tue, July-12-2011, 2:17
Dear Akhil, since these metalic instruments are get heated in homa fire, the chances of transmission of virus is less. I think no need to worry about this.
Akil Vijay DSouza, Moodubelle/Bangalore Tue, July-12-2011, 1:56
Is this method of Mudhradharane is 100% medically safe from deadly diseases caused by the transmission of viruses like Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C??? Are they using different instruments for different people???
