Moodubelle 05 July 2011: Under the government scheme 187 bicycles were distributed to the 8th and 9th standard students of St. Lawrence P.U. College in a distribution ceremony held at the College on Monday. The program was presided over by Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira – Principal. Chief Guest of the program was Devdas Hebbar – President of Taluk Panchayath. Other guests present on the occasion were; Stella Ida D’Souza – Jilla Panchayath Member, Jecintha Aranha – President of Belle Panchayath, Sujatha Suvarna – Vice President of Belle Panchayath and Gilbert A. J. D’Souza – Member of Belle Panchayath.

Devdas Hebbar in his speech said that, whatever a child needs since its birth, the government is providing all that. For example; those who have BPL card can avail Bhagyalaxmi Yojane, for delivery Madilu Yojane, for students free books and uniforms are being issued. Also, now these 187 bicycles to the students of 8th and 9th standard are also free issued. The girls of hilly areas have less opportunity to go to school and similarly for those whose house is far from school are also deprived from education. For them these bicycles might be useful. But in our district illiterates are very rare. The bicycles are issued not only for girls, but also to boys. If a girl is educated, then it is like a whole family is educated, but if the girl is not educated then the family is uneducated and may have to face poverty, he said.

Stella Ida D’Souza spoke on the occasion and said that, with the efforts of the Principal, Teachers and the students the College has earned a very good name. She advised the children to ride the bicycle slowly and safely. Jesintha Aranha in her speech said that we need to give more importance to the education. Those children who come to school from far distance will benefit from these bicycles, she said.

Leena D’Silva welcomed the guests and the gathering. Srinivas Ballal compeered the program.

This is very good move by government to encouge the education of girls. As Mr. Devdas Hebbar rightly said in villages especially in Malnad and northen Karanatatka people discontinue their girls education after primary. Congratulations to all students ho have recived bicycle and make use of time and study well.
